Kung Fu Man
Kung Fu Man
The quintessential 'template' character for MUGEN, Kung Fu Man is a martial artist who fights to rescue his girlfriend from the evil Suave Dude. Despite his basic gameplay and shallow level of code, (to help beginners learn the programming language) or perhaps because of them, he remains a significantly popular character, with countless edited versions of him by innumerable creators across the community.
- Anime Hair: His hair stands on end.
- Badass Normal: Doesn't even use fireballs or ki powers! Despite this, he somehow does have the inexplicable ability to Double Jump.
- Bare-Fisted Monk: The only attacks he has are attacking with punches or kicks.
- Brick Break: Breaks a thrown wooden board in his intro.
- The Cameo: Basara-kun's Eric has him as Assist Character. He also stars as a character in Another Kung Fu Girl Z's story.
- Difficult, but Awesome: With the right player/AI, he can be a surprisingly dangerous fighter, with the capability to knock off a third of a character's health bar for the mere cost of half a super meter!
- Defend Command: His 1.0 version has a command block called the Kung Fu Block, it allows him to parry attacks.
- Double Jump: Is capable of doing so via inexplicable means, and is probably the only trait of his that isn't 'normal'.
- Evil Counterpart: He has many, but the most known is Most_Mysterious' Evil Kung Fu Man (which is revealed as a cyborg.)
- Exactly What It Says on the Tin: He's a man who does kung fu…even though some of his moves are closer to karate.
- Face Palm: His losing pose via Time Over.
- Follow the Leader: There have been many edits of Kung Fu Man. Sturgeon's Law still applies, of course.
- Martial Arts Headband: He wears a blue one.
- Martial Arts Uniform: He wears a pale white one, more similar to Karate than Kung Fu.
- Secret Art: According to one of his 1.0 version's winquotes, it's his Kung Fu Palm attack:'Your moves are too predictable. You want to learn Kung Fu Palm? It's not for novices.'
- SNK Boss: An AI patch by Ironcommando makes him into one while avertingSecret A.I. Moves and The Computer Is a Cheating Bastard.
- Updated Re-release: A 1.0 version of KFM was released with MUGEN 1.0. Aside from having some better graphics, he also got a new special move (Kung Fu Zankou) and a new defensive technique (Kung Fu Block).
Kung Fu Girl
The portrait that S.Y.D.'s Another Kung Fu Girl Z uses
The female equivalent to the original Kung Fu Man (not related or connected to him in any way). She may seem like a carbon copy of him, but she is much more in depth than what she appears to be. And while she borrows quite a few moves from Kung Fu Man, this quickly escalates into a wide array of other moves unique to herself. She herself has been remade into various different characters as well, with the most well known version of her made by S.Y.D. (Another Kung Fu Girl Z).
- Always Accurate Attack: One of her Supers fills the entire screen, forcing you to block or pay hell for it.
- Affectionate Parody: Her story starts off with a Homage to the original Kung Fu Man's story and it contains an Dragon Ball Z-esque episode start.
- Apologetic Attacker: She may show some concern over her fallen opponent should she defeat them. Given how freakishly powerful she is, one would think she might've feared she overdid it.
- Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: One of the main differences between her and KFM. You'd think she'd be innocent and gentle but nope; she is described to be impatient and competitive, and though cheerful she's shown to be pretty cocky and even condescending at times (she also doesn't take too kindly to the man himself in her most recent incarnation).
- Badass Adorable: She's powerful enough to take down Final Form Frieza with a single Kamehameha near the end of her story with little effort, and seriously; look at her.
- Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Subverted. She has a losing portrait that shows her really bloody and bruised in several places, including her breasts.
- Blank White Eyes: Her reaction to going up against herself, staring at herself for a good minute before she snaps herself out of it.
- Boisterous Bruiser: As mentioned above, she's shown to be impatient and competitive, and a litle cocky.
- Boobs of Steel: She has the perfect bust size to showcase how goddamn hard she hits, and many sprites of hers have them jiggling like there's no tomorrow. Her ultimate technique also increases their size, resulting in Clothing Damage. That said, it's funny to see whenever she has herWardrobe Malfunction moment.
- Breast Expansion: Downplayed, but her Hokuto Hyakuretsu Ken attack has her breasts grow large enough to burst through her clothing- Thankfully, they're censored (by chibi Kung Fu Girl faces, no less).
- Broken Pedestal: She didn't take too kindly to what Kung Fu Man told her and shows some hostility toward him whenever they meet again. Thankfully she gets out of it by the end of her story.
- Brought Down to Normal: Divine Wolf's version nerfed her considerably, removing her stretching arms, her Flash Step and her ghost-summon projectile, essentialy turning her into a Badass Normal, but a pretty solid and fun chracter nonetheless.
- The Cameo: Doraemon shows up in her story.
- Clothing Damage: Certain moves used against her or moves that do her in will do this to her. Her ultimate move also does this to her just like its source material (go to the One-Hit Kill or Shout-Out entries below to see what it is). She runs off covering herself afterwards.
- Combat Pragmatist: While she'll avoid trying to cause any serious damage she'll knock anyone upside their head and to the ground if necessary (and she'll try to be a little nicer about it if it's Kung Fu Man).
- Cosplay Otaku Girl: One of her victory animations has her throw off her kung fu gi only to be shown wearing something else underneath it. This can vary including from a simple schoolgirl uniform to succubus getup.
- Fangirl: One that's hopelessly in love with Kung Fu Man.
- Flash Step: She can do this ranging from travelling short distances to further distances and from moving forward to moving backward. She's immune to all damage while in the state.
- Genki Girl: Cheerful and competitive, although a little cocky at times.
- Harsh Word Impact: On the receiving end of several, courtesy of Kung Fu Man. The result is her running away in tears very much like a spurned lover.
- Jail Bait: Very fanservicey jail bait at that. Granted, she's from Japan where the national age of consent is infamously 13, but some other places bumped the age limit up so she might be exempt from this trope.
- Kamehame Hadoken: Her projectile attack has her summon chibi Kung Fu Ghosts that look like her and are very expressive. If the light versions were conjured from the ground they travel in a straight line but the heavy versions vary on the ground (moving forward while bobbing up and down) and in the air (travel downward). The EX versions are also different if done on the ground or the air;:the ground version is actually the weakest variation but it travels in a straight line ridiculously fast and hits multiple times, serving as the perfect pressure tool; the airborne version does more damage than the other variations but only if all hits get in as the ghost is stationary. Her recent 1.0 re-release gave her access to the first part of the trope's namesake, capable of being fired straight ahead on the ground or in the air.
- Kid Hero: Embarks on her adventure at the age of 16. This leads to...
- Let's Get Dangerous!: A very subtle example: her idle stance changes into a more serious expression with a slightly different body positioning when she enters her Super Mode.
- Martial Arts Headband: She wears one on her hair.
- Meaningful Name: S.Y.D.'s more recent updates of Kung Fu Girl have the letter 'Z' in their name. For all intents and purposes she is a Dragon Ball Z character power-wise with a few abilities modeled after a M.U.G.E.N. character. She even has her name as part of her arcade story's introduction spoof of said series.
- Ms. Fanservice: Oh most definitely. Her measurements? Bust = 90, Waist = 56, and Hips = 87.
- Nerf: A minor one that was done to her by S.Y.D was the A.I. transition from Johnny Bravo's incarnation of her to the current one. Another one was the lack of being able to infinitely perform air dashes, limited to just two per airtime. Divine Wolf's edit of her nerfed her drastically but she's still a solid character either way (although this did make her even more similar to Kung Fu Man as most of the things Divine Wolf removed were unique to her in addition to toning down the moves he didn't get rid of).
- Not Good with Rejection: She has the hots for Kung Fu Man, but whatever it is that he said to her in the beginning of her story (it's all in Japanese by the way), she did not take it well. Shame for her that he's already got a girlfriend...
- One-Hit Kill: She has the (in)famous Hokuto Hyakuretsu Ken technique, and it is rightfully her most powerful attack.
- Rubber Man: She's shown to be able to stretch her arms across long distances, resulting in the special move 'Kung Fu Whip' and 'Kung Fu Beat'. This is just one of the drastic differences between her and Kung Fu Man.
- Secret Art: The moveset pictures give no indication that she has the move, and given how infrequent a computer-controlled akfgz will use the move, most players would never know.
- Shadow Archetype: She's a female to contrast with the original Kung Fu Man, and while she isn't evil-aligned as far as anyone knows she's far from being completely nice or gentle. She does try not to hurt anyone severely if that's worth anything but don't think she'll hold back much if she wants to take someone down. She also possesses powerful superhuman abilities where the original Kung Fu Man seems barely superhuman at best.
- Shaped Like Itself: She's a girl who practices kung fu…even though so many of her moves are otherwise. She's also a practitioner of yoga and another style named after the Greek letter 'alpha'.
- Shotoclone: Clearly of Kung Fu Man, though she is far from a simple knock-off.
- Shout-Out: She contains numerous Vocaloid, My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, and Puella Magi Madoka Magica palettes. And as mentioned above she has the Hokuto Hyakuretsu Ken technique, used by Kenshiro of Fist of the North Star fame. Another Super Move of hers has Bruce Lee's famous 'One-Inch Punch' as a finishing move.
- SNK Boss: The biggest, undisputed difference between her and KFM because of her A.I. She has ridiculous range with her wide variety of moves (including some of her normal attacks) and among some of those moves are those that hit freakishly hard (most of them being her supers). And if that's not enough she has a five bar super gauge and EX special move capacity.
- Super-Deformed: She will change into such whenever characters who have curses hit her with such a move. Her chibi ghosts also look like they're this to her.
- Super Mode: Her 7th through 12th palettes (i.e. Holding the Start button while choosing a palette) empower her already solid moves further and every attack is covered in a pink trail of pink colored ki giving her attacks further range. And she doesn't just conjure up one Kung Fu Ghost, she conjures up two.
- Trademark Favorite Food: Eel sauce rice.
- Unsportsmanlike Gloating: She indulges in this at times.
- Woman Scorned: She has shown to be Not Good with Rejection and didn't take well what Kung Fu Man told her, although she gets better by the end of her story. Divine Wolf' version changes this, where they have a sensei-student relationship, and Kung Fu Girl deeply respects him.
- You Gotta Have Blue Hair: She has red Anime Hair.
Dragon Claw
A divine warrior made to combat evil with powerful blades, pyromancy and acrobatic skills. Dragon Claw was sprited, conceived and coded entirely by the late legendary Singaporean creator Reubenkee, famous for having created the original evil shoto edits and making an evil form of Ken Masters playable before SNK vs Capcom Chaos. He remains popular even today for the obscene amounts of effort and love put into the character by its creator, as well as just looking damn cool and having a rewarding combo system.
- Badass Back: One of his winposes.
- Blade Below the Shoulder: Each of his 'hands' are v-shaped blade-things.
- Bullet Time: A few of his attacks induce this for extra awesomeness.
- Combos: Notable in the fact that he can combo Limit Breaks together!
- Counter Attack: Hit him when he's performing Counter Blow and he'll avoid damage while hitting you instead.
- Difficult, but Awesome: His AI makes it look so easy, but in reality Dragon Claw requires significant practice to play effectively. His combo system is quite intricate and his cancels aren't as loose as they appear.
- Digitized Sprites: From 3D to 2D.
- Everything's Better with Spinning: Crescent Moon Slash.
- Flash Step: A few of his moves invoke this.
- Flight: He can sort-of propel himself through the air during Homing Flight, Sun Blast, Heaven's Sword, and the super variant of Flash Burst.
- Leitmotif: Composed by the creator himself, who was also a skilled pianist.
- Lightning Bruiser: Moves quickly yet gracefully. While his attacks aren't exactly that damaging, he can perform them in long quick combos to rack up tons of damage.
- Limit Break: His Limit Breaks have a Limit Break of their own, where there's a 10% chance that a different, much stronger variant (Meta Super Special Move) is pulled off. This can also be triggered by chaining three Limit Breaks together- the last one will always be an MSSM.
- SNK Boss: His AI knows how to read commands and counter projectiles, as well as pull off his combo attacks with great ease.
- Super Mode: He can summon a Flame Wisp that aids him whenever he attacks, allowing him to deal much higher damage.
Lord Ravenous
Created by EX Inferis, sprited by On.Off
Initially an edit of Freeman from Garou Mark Of The Wolves, Ravenous was re-sprited entirely by On.Off and given a new moveset. Lord Ravenous is an Obviously Evil man with long red hair in a black sleeveless coat wielding an axe and a revolver. He seems able to transform his body into grotesque shapes in several moves. Unfortunately, the character itself is very old and poorly programmed, but still has a significant following just because his concept and moves are well thought out and cool to look at.
- Badass Longcoat: In On.Off version.
- Evil Redhead/Fiery Redhead
- Evil Wears Black: Mostly seen in original version.
- Gorn: Ravenous even has Fatalities.
- No Shirt, Long Jacket: In On.Off version.
- Signature Style: On.Off also is famous for create other original-sprited characters like Lucy Fernandez (coded by Fervicante) and the resprite of Kain The Supreme's Lupin III. He's actually working in a full game called Trajes Fataisnote (not for MUGEN) where almost all the game is made by him just Doing It for the Art.
Ella, Ubu, Kuando and Giano
Created and sprited by Aiduzzi
Four crazy, over the top hard hitters conceptualized and sprited entirely from scratch by Italian artist and programmed Aiduzzi. Ella is a Stringy-Haired Ghost Girl and homage to various horror films, while the other three are a bit more…hard to pin down. Ubu is an old man who shoots fire from his fingers, Kuando is a crazy loudmouth brawler, and Giano is another old man with very strange, unpredictable attack animations. The would later appear in their own fighting game, 'Rotten Core'.
- All Love Is Unrequited: Perro has an unrequited crush on Ella.
- All There in the Manual: They were given backstories in 'Rotten Core'.
- Ubu is an arsonist obsessed with blowing things up. His style is sloppy and he is prone to losing his train of thought, sometimes even falling asleep while he is standing. However he is still a versatile fighter. He uses his hands as guns and that’s quite literal, as he can hit opponents either from close range with high explosive punches, or from long range with powerful cannon shots and bursts of “machine gun fire”.
- Ella’s mysterious origins are known only to Ubu. Her power is held inside the disturbing objects that she carries, most notably, her slimy, talking teddy bear known as ‘Trauma’. Her fighting style is unpredictable, as these objects will burst forth from where they are hidden inside her body. Most notable of these hidden objects is Trauma himself, who is also heavily armed.
- Giano is Ubu’s brother. Tortured by bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, he is prone to violent and unprovoked attacks, and is believed to be haunted by more than one-hundred entities. He looks old, but his punches are heavy. Giano's gameplay is focused on combos, and his moves involve launchers that devastate opponents, especially from close range.
- Kuando is a dirty street boxer with no empathy, who loves to make anyone he can suffer as much as possible. Though he is constantly dressed in a motorcycle outfit, as far as anyone can tell, he does not own a motorcycle. His unorthodox style uses 3 different stances to cover short, middle and long distances, and he is both versatile and deadly.
- The burly bald man in his underwear that appears in Ubu's winposes is named Perro.
- Ax-Crazy: Kuando for sure. Possibly the others as well.
- Bare-Fisted Monk: Giano and Kuando don't have any weapons or special powers, they just beat the shit out of you.
- Chainsaw Good: Ella utilizes a chainsaw in several moves.
- Early Installment Weirdness: Ubu was one of the first characters Aiduzzi sprited. As such, he has Gen's head atop Fei Long's body with Yamazaki's pants as opposed to being custom sprited like his other characters.
- Fan Disservice: Kuando seems to enjoy dressing up in 'sexy' outfits before and after matches.
- Shout-Out: Ella is all over the place with these. She kills Mario in an intro and Alfred Hitchcock in another. One of her super moves is a reference to the classic Psycho shower scene, complete with the soundtrack. Kuando attacks Paul Phoenix of Tekken fame in one introduction sequence.
- Stringy-Haired Ghost Girl: Ella, with the obligatory The Ring introduction sequence.
Bluestreak
Created and sprited by Diepod, coded by Jesuszilla
'Here's some advice. If you want your kicks to look sexy, wear a hoodie!'
A relatively new and popular character, Bluestreak is a man with electricity based powers who can call upon the powers of a demonic gargoyle.
- Arrogant, Boisterous, Hammy, and Smug Super: He is a dude playing superhero, but he'spretty jerkishand holds back bar nil in combat. He's also an all around ham. Here's some of his quotes that should give you a feel of who he is.'Fuck your feelings, I throw lightning!''VIDEOGAMESGETATMEDOG!'
- Heroic Self-Deprecation: You'll never see it in M.U.G.E.N. itself, but he has his doubts at living up to the superhero we's striving to be.
- Ink-Suit Actor: Is voiced by his creator. Might or might not have been based on him appearance and/or personality wise.
- Bond Creatures: Him and the Gargoyle have this relationship. This is why he is able to shapeshift to either assume the form of the Gargoyle (or allow it to take control and show through his own body for some time) or to have it attack alongside him whenever he wants.
- Shapeshifting Excludes Clothing: When he goes full Gargoyle.
- Magic Pants: After he leaves full Gargoyle.
- Berserk Button: 'LIGHTNING IS NOT YELLOW!!'
- Canon Immigrant: Not to M.U.G.E.N., but to his creator's original comic project 'White Eyes'. Bluestreak debuted in M.U.G.E.N. long before he'll get his comic debut proper.
- Easter Egg: In his Zeus Major while he's of normal stature you'll hear the Goofy Holler should the second to last part of the move connect. It fits well with his hammier side.
- Expy/Composite Character: Between Demitri Maximoff, Kazuya Mishima, Noob Saibot, and Static Shock. Demitri was known for occasionally changing between his humanoid form and his true vampire form in combat whether attacking or being attacked, Kazuya can completely assume the form of Devil, Saibot could attack independently of Noob, and Static Shock was a black male with access to electricity-based powers. Bluestreak and the gargoyle fit all of these descriptions to the letter.
- I Know Mortal Kombat: Incorporates Tekken juggles and the (Goddamned) Tatsumaki into his moveset, with his own twist on each.
- In the Hood: He lampshades it too with his picture's caption quote.
- Scary Black Man: He gets visual pun bonus points for this trope by being able to transform into a monstrous gargoyle who's skin is pitch black. He's slightly less so while super deformed.
- Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: 'Hey Rugal…eat a dick!'
- Super-Deformed: An alternate such version of him sprited by Balthazar (spriter and co-founder of Team Z2) exists. His voice is pitched higher than the original's and he's incredibly short, and some of his moves are either different from the original's or the same but adjusted to the new size.
- Super Soldier: Was unwittingly and unwillingly selected to be part of an experiment to create super soldiers many years ago as a preteen child along with four other classmates after a bus crash.
- Phlebotinum Rebel: He and the other four involved in the project eventually cut themselves loose from their experimentors and trashed the lab before going on to go live their lives.
Tetsu Yatogi
Created by XCB (Big Eli King)
'Life is full of disappointments, and you're definitely one of them pal!'
Formerly from an extremely obscure Japanese game (Fighting Game Creator), he was taken by the aforementioned author and revamped into a completely different character for MUGEN and is well liked to this day.
- Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: He very much thinks highly of himself. To quote:'It's not that you're a bad fighter, it's just that I'm too damn good!'
- Combat Pragmatist: He has an unblockable move for one, an attack called 'Heart Attack' with is an electric, doubled handed thrust to an opponent's chest, and will have no problems electrocuting someone while he's strangling them by their neck.
- Dark and Troubled Past/Freudian Excuse: See The Syndicate below for some of the other details concerning this. Him being a Japanese born and raised in America did him no favors when he went looking for help from the native Japanese (except for the soon-to-be-murdered friend of his father). It's one of the reasons he's such a huge ass to everyone he meets.
- Expy: Formerly of Ryu to a painful extent. He still is, but he's far from a simple knockoff at this point to really count. He and his father also partially count as expies to Scorpion with similar backstories and professions with revenge (in Tetsu's case) being their primary motivation for their actions. The copied moves below are...
- Flash Step: Utilizes this for Assassin Streak - letting him go straight through attacks, and Shadow Strike - a dashing elbow strike that allows for follow-ups. He also does this for catching up to an opponent that left him offscreen and for one of his victory animations.
- Golden Super Mode: His last palette gives him this look with some boosts to go with it.
- Kick Chick: Male example; he's pretty kick happy and the more complex moves in his arsenal are either kicks or have kick-based follow-ups.
- Long-Lost Relative: He and his sister are this to each other. That missing sister is Blaque, whose real name is Akane Yatogi.
- Sibling Rivalry: Unknowing and unintentional on his part when it comes to Blaque.
- Older Than They Look: Tetsu's a grown man who looks to be in his teens. He's also Blaque's older twin brother despite looking younger than her.
- Mirror Match: His response to one is to call it 'attack of the clones' but quickly notes that the other Tetsu didn't copy his skill.
- Neutral is Not Niceor Soft: He's an asshole who will kick people's teeth in if he has to but he's not enough of this to be a villain, and while he's out to get undoubtedly nasty people he's motivated almost solely by revenge like Scorpion.
- Professional Killer: Like Father, Like Son and Like Brother Like Sister. He's not out to kill anybody who hadn't made his life Hell however.
- Ninja: He wears an all-black gi and he possesses high comboability and speed. He's also a professional killer as stated above, and to top it off he's Japanese. If we didn't know any better we'd have thought him to be a ninja in plain view (or is he?).
- Turn Out Like His Father: This is what his old man tried to avoid when raising him but that failed.
- The Rival: To Blaque.
- Shock and Awe: We're not even sure how he got these powers in the first place, but the assumption is that he's either always had them or gained them by training with his father figures.
- The Syndicate: Tetsu's ultimate antagonist dudded the Scion Syndicate. His father is a former assassin of the organization (not that Tetsu knows) who was terminated by them alongside his wife, his younger sister was kidnapped by them and conditioned with the goal of becoming their perfect weapon, his adoptive caretaker who knew his father took him in only to get taken out by the same organization, and they're clearly out for him by sending Blaque (his aforementioned sister that he's unaware is his very rival) to spy on him and kill him if necessary.
- Revenge: As such he's out for the Scion Syndicate who killed his parents (real and adoptive) and kidnapped his sister, so he entered a tournament they held to get some answers.
- Truth in Television: The aforementioned ostracization by native Japanese that Tetsu went through? Very much true.
- Unblockable Attack: His Demon Upper is like a grounded version of his Tetsu Upper that's much more telegraphed but hits really damn hard.
- Weak, but Skilled: Is flat out described as this in his readme; he can't pull off extremely powerful attacks right off the bat, but he CAN pull off a long stringed combo and he has a mindgame-ish moveset that makes him so dangerous.
- Willfully Weak: He implies that he's not actually trying when he fights, though this could just be more of him trash talking.
- What Happened to the Mouse?: A character named Travis is mentioned in Tetsu's backstory. No future mention is made of him in either his or Blaque's backstories.
Blaque (Akane Yatogi)
'I have no reason to kill you. So, try not to give me one, 'kay?'
A character who is similar to Tetsu Yatogi above her. She's more of a Game-Breaker compared to him but is still an interesting character.
- ColorCodedTheme Naming: Blaque, alongside fellow assassins Grey and Redd.
- Dark Action Girl: She's Affably Evil for an assassin and even comes across as a Hitman with a Heart at times.Affably Evil doesn't actually apply to her and she's really a straight-up action girl given her real motives.
- Dark and Troubled Past: Having her parents murdered at an early age and stolen from her only family left (who happens to be her current target Tetsu Yatogi), and being subjected to numerous experiments to become a perfect assassin. Also having Redd (her mother figure)) take the blow from Grey who meant to mercy kill a sleeping Blaque instead.
- Double Entendre: Loves throwing these out, and they're as blatant as you'd expect.'I like being on top. It gives me more pleasure that way.''Done already? With a stamina like that, you'll never keep a girl satisfied...''Sorry, little girl. You're not quite ready for the big leagues yet.'
- The Dragon: To the Scion Syndicate.
- Dragon with an Agenda: To free herself of their control and rekindle with Tetsu.
- Expy: Quite possibly one to M. Bison ability-wise. She's definitely one to Juri Han backstory wise.
- Flash Step: Just like with Tetsu she too has this technique. She's sometimes seen chasing after Tetsu in his own flash step victory animation provided that the two didn't fight.
- Glass Cannon: Thanks to the multitude of experiments performed on her,
- Hellfire: She even refers to her own powers as the 'Flames of Hell' and one of her moves is literally named after the trope.
- Ms. Fanservice: Openly states her bust size with no shame (a D cup to be exact) and has no problems with others ogling her, taking pride in her attractiveness. She also throws out double entendres, teases smaller-sized females, and almost goads others to touch her 'there' (wherever 'there' is). For the last one she does warn them that they're not guaranteed to live afterwards.
- Names to Run Away from Really Fast: Her codename 'Blaque' and her 'Flames of Hell' powers do not cast a friendly picture for her. Subverted with her real name seen above.
- NobleAnti Villainess: She's a villainous character but she's also sympathetic. even more so when we find out who she really is.
- AntiHero Antagonist: Her ultimate alignment.
- No-Sell: She can utilize a vanishing move that makes her outright immune to projectiles.
- Phlebotinum Breakdown/Superpower Meltdown: It's said that if it wasn't for her special suit she wears to regulate her body temperature, she would've self-immolated from her own powers being too great.
- Professional Killer:Like Father Like Daughter and Like Brother Like Sister.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: a result of the numerous experiments done to her.
- The Rival: To Tetsu.
- Sibling Rivalry: Unintentional on her part.
- Stalker with a Crush: She comes across as this to Tetsu.
- Stalker Without a Crush: It's subverted considering that they're related.
- Super Mode: Two of them: one during gameplay and one in the backstory.
- Golden Super Mode: Just like Tetsu she has this.
- Super-Powered Evil Side: This form showed up exactly once but it is not present in gameplay itself, though the physical characteristics include a voice of the legion and WhiteHair. The aforementioned and failed mercy kill attempt above is what drew it out. The result was Grey ending up being deader than dead before he could explain himself. It hasn't resurfaced since thanks to Redd getting her back to normal in her dying moments by revealing her past to her. This form is exactly what the syndicate wanted though.
- The Syndicate: The organization she works for as well as being her current and true enemy.
- Token Minority: She's this to mainland Japan as she's a Japanese born and raised in America, also like Tetsu. This no longer becomes a surprise once it's found out that they're blood siblings.
- Trap Master: She can create (multiple) energy land mines for her opponents to walk onto and trigger an explosion of energy.
- Walking Spoiler: Thanks to her backstory.
- Younger Than They Look: She is 20 and looks like a grown woman but she's actually younger than the contrasting Tetsu. She's his younger sister.
Suave Dude
The villainous man who kidnapped Kung Fu Man's girlfriend. Who he is and what his motivations are are never really elaborated on, but he does carry a gun!
- Arch-Enemy: Of Kung Fu Man.
- Foil: To Kung Fu Man. Besides their differing moralities, both of them have opposite fighting styles. While KFM focuses of using his fists and palms, Suave Dude uses his legs much more often, and his special move commands are similar to Kung Fu Man's except they use kicks instead of punches.
- The Glasses Come Off: If you set a certain variable in his code to 1, he'll become unable to use any super moves in the first round. However, if he gets defeated once then, he takes his glasses off for the rest of the match and enables his super attacks.
- Guns Are Worthless: His intro has him throw away the gun in his hand, and then he goes on to fight via melee attacks.
- SNK Boss: An AI patch by Ironcommando makes him into one while avertingSecret A.I. Moves and The Computer Is a Cheating Bastard.
- The Unfought: For many years, until he was coded and re-sprited by Masukenpu-kun.
Reject 253
Created by Kamekaze, voiced by Kaneto Shiozawa (via recycled clips from Kairi in Street Fighter EX)
A different kind of Shotoclone that uses Ken's sprites from Capcom vs. SNK 2: Mark of the Millennium. Allegedly the character is meant to be an evil spirit possessing Ken's body. More likely, this explanation is a cop-out to make up for the lack of custom sprites.
- Shout-Out: The character's moveset is largely based on Kairi from Street Fighter EX, he even has the same voice clips.
- You Are Number 253: The creator himself has stated that he has plans and ideas for more 'Reject' characters based on the sprites of other fighting game characters.
Sula Crystal
Created by Nao&M, voiced by Miyuki Matsushita (original) and Jessica Straus (English voice pack add-on, recycled clips from Juri in Super Street Fighter IV)
Years before it became a popular trend to re-sprite Kula into original creators, Nao&M took her sprites and recycled the animations into a completely new moveset, in an example of low-budget creativity not unlike the aforementioned Reject. Instead of calling it an EX version, the creators instead re-christened their character and gave her a new personality and color scheme. To this day she is still a very popular character, being re-created several times and having a decent chunk of fan artwork.
- Bare Your Midriff: Allegedly and according to her artwork, but you can't exactly tell from the sprites.
- Cyborg: It's not official that Sula could be one, but various edits of her confirms it, not to mention she has similar standing pose than y.y's Robo-Rock.
- Frickin' Laser Beams: Utilizes them inexplicably in one of her supers (unless this confirms Sula is actually a cyborg).
- Rose-Haired Sweetie: Not even a sweetie, but she has a pale rose hair.
Detective Garret Laurel
Created and sprited by Seanaltly
A roughneck police detective, initially a part of the creator's fullgame, 'SHADES of Manhattan' but became incredibly popular outside of the game for his distinct personality, rewarding gameplay and over the top voice acting. His popularity became so overwhelming that he showed up in one of the creator's other projects, Capcom vs. The World.
- Badass Normal: Takes on superhumans, the undead, and more with nothing but his fists, a riot batton and his handgun.
- Breakout Character / Ensemble Dark Horse: Undoubtedly the most popular SHADES character.
- Dolled-Up Installment: Another creator edited Det. Laurel to convert him into Commissioner Gordon from Batman series.
- Large Ham: STOP RESISTING!
- Revolvers Are Just Better: Carries a Taurus Judge revolver as his sidearm, which allows the player to switch between using bullets and shotshells at any time.
- Shout-Out: To CSI: Miami in his 'perfect' win pose. YEAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!
Elque
Created by yuki, modified by Ziggerfreud and Ironcommando
A black demon partially based off Eddie's sprites. It attacks mainly by slashing the enemy with its claws, and moves extremely fast. Infamous for its cheapness, to the point where people made a nerfed edit of it.
- Always Accurate Attack: The lightning storm attack used by the original. It's pretty much a fullscreen move that deals heavy damage…and a pretty good amount of chip damage too, if you blocked.
- Always Chaotic Evil: Will even attack its partner during victory animation, should its health be low enough.
- Blade Spam: Besides his evil claw move, his Last Judgement hyper also makes use of this. The modified version also has a Finishing Move where he does this until the opponent explodes into blood.
- Cast from Hit Points: The modified version can enter a mode that makes him use his health to fuel his hypers. In this mode, his One-Hit Kill becomes a Death-or-Glory Attack that makes his HP to 1, ensuring that he'll be finished shortly if it doesn't kill his foe.
- Death of a Thousand Cuts: One of its claims to infamy was its ability to 'corner rape' a guarding opponent with its claw attack, slowly chipping away as his foe can't fight back due to hitstun. The modified version depends on this to win as its attacks deal rather low damage per hit.
- Elemental Punch: Evil Claw is a claw attack extended by the power of darkness, giving it longer range.
- Extremity Extremist: Has no kicking moves at all, using claw swipes for all its regular attacks and some specials.
- Finishing Move: The modified version can go into a Finisher mode when the opponent was at very low health, allowing it to use its One-Hit Kill without using any power. Most of its specials trigger a 'fatality' move of sorts if they knock the foe to zero health.
- Beat Still, My Heart/And Show It to You: Finishing the foe with Raging Charge follows up with Heart Rip, pinning the foe to the wall, ripping their heart out, then crushing it.
- Diagonal Cut/Half the Man He Used to Be: Finishing the foe with Crescent Razor follows up with Soul Slicer, which cuts the opponent into two diagonal halves.
- There Is No Kill Like Overkill: Using Evil Claw to finish the foe results in Hell Rending, where Elque uses his claw Spam Attack so many times until the foe is ripped into nothingness.
- Hand Blast: He can fire out blue beams from his hands.
- Heal Thyself: Both versions have an ability where they use power stocks to heal themselves.
- Gradual Grinder: The original version could spam its Evil Claw attack against a guarding opponent and push them against a wall, causing the chip damage to kill them.
- Invisibility Cloak: Not exactly one, but the original version had the ability to turn the entire background black when low on health. Since Elque is totally black except his red eyes, it became hard for a player to tell where he was.
- Lightning Bruiser: The original had a walking speed twice as fast as most character's running speed, and dealt insane damage to opponents. It also had regenerating health. This version is often considered to be a Game-Breaker compared to non uber-cheap characters.
- Lunacy: The original version caused the moon to appear when low on health, giving it increased health and energy regeneration.
- Nerf: The modified version.
- One-Hit Kill: Oni no Tsume Zeroshiki.
- Pillar Of Darkness: Devil Geyser.
- Razor Wind: His cresent energy slashes.
- Regenerating Health: The original had this.
- Roar Before Beating: One of its intro poses.
- Shock and Awe: Has an electrical thunderstorm as a Limit Break. The modified version adds a thunderbolt move as a Special Attack.
- Shout-Out: The modified version has Genocide Cutter as an attack, except much weaker.
- It also uses sounds from Left 4 Dead's Hunter.
- Silliness Switch: The modified version has an option to turn his roars to the dog from the Beggin' Strips's commercial saying 'Bacon!'.
- SNK Boss: The original version. It's extremely fast, regenerated health and power (faster as his health got lower), had super moves that did about 50-75% of your health, a One-Hit Kill, hurts a ton with normal attacks, can chip your health to zero if you blocked its Evil Claw move. When its health got low enough it also turned the screen dark, making it hard for a player to find him.
- Spam Attack: Has this in its 'evil claw' move. The original could literally destroy a guarding opponent via block damage by cornering them and using this over and over again.
- Super-Deformed: Papitto created a miniature version called Tibi/Chibi Elque, which features some new moves.
- Super Speed: The original.
- Unwinnable Joke AI: The modified version has an 'unbeatable' mode if you set its AI level to 666.
- Instant-Win Condition: Any attack in this mode will destroy anything short of an 'uber-cheap' character.
- No-Sell: Can't be hit by attacks at all.
- Wave Motion Gun: Gains a One-Hit KillShoop Da Whoop.
Dee Bee Kaw
Created by The_None and voiced by Jesuszilla
'Here's your lesson kiddies, this is almost how you do an original character.'note
An MS Paint drawn man who, after his hamster Mistah Ham Ham is killed in yet another violent street fight, proceeds to feed the vicious cycle of violence in the hood.
- Beware the Silly Ones: He might just be M.U.G.E.N's biggest example. He's A Fighting Clown Cloudcuckoolander whose moveset runs on the absurd. He also has an incredibly brutal AI, he hits like a truck, and he damn well knows how to use his moveset to his advantage.
- Break Meter: Dee bee Kaw features a 'Neurotic Gauge' which in addition to altering basic attacks at random, will stun him to a dizzy state if he gets hit when the meter is full. This gauge will fill whenever Dee bee kaw attacks or gets hit.
- Also defending against too many consecutive hits will cause DBK's arm(or leg) to snap off and leave him open for an attack
- Confusion Fu: Thats putting it lightly. He can pull out bear traps, a gun to shoot at the ground, a rocket launcher, bang his head to extremely heavy metal, turn himself into a flying fist, summon Joseph Joestar for a rising punch, a giant hamster, statues, and on top of all that, pull off techniques from other characters. That's only the tip of the iceberg.
- Difficult, but Awesome: Same as Dragonclaw, his brutal AI makes it look easy while in reality to take the most out of him one must master his combos and specals (some which feature unorthodox button commands) as well as managing his neurotic gauge and inability to guard indefintely, all which takes a significant amount of practice.
- Disproportionate Retribution: His reaction to the death of his beloved pet hamster? To rip an entire multiverse of fighters a new one.
- Dolled-Up Installment: He was edited from Big Eli King (one of first XCB's characters and the first nickname he used, basically a character of himself) as The_None stated in the readme.
- Fighting Clown: Looks and acts very silly, but plays like a normal character (and a pretty powerful one at that).
- Hoist by His Own Petard: Dee Bee Kaw can stun himself with his own beartraps if he steps on them, leaving him wide open.
- Lampshade Hanging: The entire HTML readme.
- Nintendo Hard: His AI is absolutely relentless and will abuse and exploit every single strength available to him as much as possible. His Maherl bomb will catch you off-guard and his combos will destroy a great portion of your life if you allow him. His extremely aggressive gameplay means openings against him are slim, so make your next combo count!
- Rocket Jump: One of his moves involves the use of this.
- Shout-Out: His Drive is directly taken from Taokaka, he shoots out Joseph Joestar in his RISING GRANDPA special, he has Robert Garcia's Genei Kyaku (the EX version is Chun-Li's Hoyoku-Sen) and the Maherl Bomb and in his A THUD A WHO super he can either fire a Shinku Hadouken, Ash Crimson's Thermidor, a Kaiser Wave, a multiplying plate of turkey from Tattoo Assassins, a Proton Cannon (Or a ProtonKanon), Omega Tiger Wood's head or The World, wherein he then performs Shadow DIO's 'Punishment!' super.
- His ending even references Ojamajo Doremi, of all things.
- Significant Anagram: Two of his supers are anagrams of descriptions of the attacks: A-THUD A-WHO, which fires a random projectile as a Kamehame Hadouken is an anagram of HADOUWHAT, while SCUMLIKE, TACTFUL, TRUE, the grab special that involves Akuma, DIO on a road roller, and a giant can of Pepsi flattening you and your opponent, is an anagram of ULTIMATE CLUSTERFUCK.
Eric - Unperfect Shotoklone
'You must defeat... bah, I forgot the name of the guy.'note
A guy who loves street fighting and makes his own journey to be the best just by improvising moves that learned from other fighters. The first original creation of his creator (which also made the voices), Eric is one of his most famous creations and sometimes he uses Eric as base for various of his characters.
- Affectionate Parody: Of Shotoclones in general, especially the original ones.
- Take That!: Eric's Evil CounterpartLoud Demon works more as this for Evil Shotoclones.
- Allergic to Routine: According to his story in character's readme, after deciding to be a karateka, Eric took a class on Shotokan Karate, but he retired because it was too boring for him, but it was useful in the end.
- Awesomeness by Analysis: Eric can learns quickly a technique just to see (and being hitted by) it. Most of his moves comes from other fighters he fought.
- Characteristic Clothing Colors: His caracteristic cyan karategi, a Shout-Out of Dan Hibiki's pink karategi.
- Demoted to Extra: Typical shotoclone moves (Hadoken, Shoryuken and Hurricane Kick) are demoted to command moves instead as special/super moves.
- Expy: Of a lot of characters from Capcom and even SNK. Not to mention the character was made using Alpha's shotoclones and Cody Travers' head.
- Evil Counterpart: Loud Demon, an 'evil' version of Eric, which is just Eric as a Dark-Skinned Blond with black karategi and overpowered versions of his moves.
- Follow the Leader: Eric was a fan of street fighting since he was a child, especially of Ryu, the reason why he trained Karate.
- Guest Fighter: Kung Fu Man appears as Eric's Assist Character.
- Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Yes, he's blonde, but he fits better as a Jerk with a Heart of Gold.
- Hero-Worshipper: Of Ryu and Kung Fu Man.
- Identical Stranger: Eric's portraits (big and small) were made by editing Street Fighter Alpha 2 portraits of Ken Masters just by short his hair and change the colors of karategi and gloves.
- I Know Mortal Kombat: Coming from a Capcom's character, Eric has moves from other companies' games, mostly from SNK's The King of Fighters.
- Ink-Suit Actor: Voiced by his creator, Basara-kun.
- In-Series Nickname: The 'Unperfect Shotoklone'.
- Lethal Joke Character: Eric's evil version called as Loud Demon as a spoof of Evil MUGEN Shotoclones, released just for a day for 2010 April Fools' Day. Loud Demon became so famous and requested in MUGEN forums that Basara-kun put him back online on 2014 with his new website with a few improvement.
- Megaton Punch: Eric's Turbo Punch, which also can negates projectiles and has a super version.
- Power Copying: Basically which makes him different from other MUGEN shotoclones, since Eric mimify the moves of the opponent he fought, no matter if he won or not.
- This comes literally as Mega Manning since he also has Eric Buster, an imitation of Mega Man's Megabuster, which also is chargeable into a more-powered version.
- Rule 63/Gender Flip: A bikini female version of Eric in the form of Midnight Bliss.
- Shoryuken: Eric Uppercut, which is a Shout-Out of Sagat's Tiger Uppercut.
- Shout-Out: Eric has a lot of moves from SNK fighters, mostly from The King of Fighters franchise.
- Also, Eric has a winning pose where he scares of seeing people from a side of the screen and escapes. These characters could be beautiful fighting women, a couple of bosses and even innocent mascots. All of them come from different games and make cameos in different versions of the same winpose.
- And various of Eric's quotes come from other fighters as imitation of them, impersonating Kyo Kusanagi, Geese Howard, Guy and other famous fighters.
- Walking the Earth: Following the steps of Ryu, Eric travels to meet strong opponents and tests his skills.
- What the Hell Is That Accent?: According to his story, Eric comes from Chicago, but has a latino accent. This is mostly because his creator comes from Chile.
Ryuko
'Cafe de Ryuko presents one flaming hot fist and knuckle sandwich, extra crispy and no cheese! Enjoy!'
From the maker of some of the most powerfully made characters in M.U.G.E.N comes his pride and joy. She's a Japanese schoolgirl who may seem like your average human but she boasts serious hidden powers and even commands her own humongous mecha.
- Always Accurate and UnblockableMacross Missile Massacre: Ryuko's mech fires missiles from the arms for 'Misairu'. No one can block or dodge it. Period.
- Art Shift: When using some super moves the screen will change into an anime like scene as Ryuko wails on her opponent.
- Badass Back: She has her back facing the screen in an Akuma-esque fashion before she turns to fight her opponent, complete with the obligitory breeze.
- BFS: She wields one when she pilots her Gundam, and it is almost as long as the mech is tall.
- Boisterous Bruiser: Without question.
- Blood Knight: Gets satisfaction out of a good match and laments when an opponent did poorly against her.
- Does This Remind You of Anything?: Her Gundam has a bust as per the norm, but Ryuko's hapens to have green lights where the 'nipples' should be.
- Digitized Sprites: Similar to Dragon Claw above and 'Brokken' (the kung fu man in his own Gundam-like mech), Ryuko's robot was made in 3D before being converted to 2D.
- Elemental Powers
- Blow You Away: Her Hadou is a miniature tornado she flings her opponent's way.
- Playing with Fire: Ikari features several ground punches - the last of which causes an eruption of fire. Ryuko then charges at her opponent with a burning megaton punch.
- Shock and Awe: Her Hadou2 attack resembles a plasma ball which stops on contact with anything but resumes movement afterward, only fizzing out after a certain amount of time. Raigeki is a ground punch that sends out a shockwave, and the first part of Ikari sends out electric currents after the first ground punch. While in her mech she can create a lightning bolt to toss at her opponent, and Voltekka and Koredre electrocute the grabbed opponent.
- Fighting Clown: She does have a number of authentic looking martial arts moves, but she mixes them in with absurdity (transforming into a humongous mecha, kicking people by dancing the ballerina).
- Humongous Mecha: Styled right after a Gundam no less. For M.U.G.E.N though, the Gundam had to be scaled down in relation to other characters. In her normal state she can turn into one before unleashing rapid fire fisticuffs while moving forward.
- Kamehame Hadoken: Her super hadou will pass through any other projectile, ensuring that she'll win projectie wars with it if timed right.
- Kick Them While They're Down: She attacks while she's getting up after getting knocked down, making sure this trope is subverted when she's one the recieving end.
- Megaton Punch: Her 'Anime P' move is a single uppercut triggered if Ryuko grabs her opponent while dashing forward ala Shun Goku Satsu. A winquote of hers has her bragging that she punched her opponent so hard that they'll land in China at 12 a.m. a week from her fight.
- Muggle: Has the look of one, but she utterly defies this trope in the most nonsensical way.
- Muscles Are Meaningless: The original version of her could go toe-to-toe with RARE AKUMA. While not as grossly overpowered in her second incarnation, she'll still hit harder than a semi made of bricks if given the chance.
- Panty Shot: All over the place. Even her humongous mecha is guilty of this trope. A win quote Zero-Sennin gave her has her mocking the opponent's loss citing their distraction with them as a factor.
- Rocket Punch: As expected of someone who has access to a humongous mech.
- She-Fu: She has plenty of graceful movements in her moveset but isn't shy when it comes to getting up close and personal.
- Shoujoclone: Partially of the trope codifiers. She has three moves with the word 'hadou' in their names (and only one doesn't have a quarter-circle motion), she has her own Shoryuken special and super, and her 'Senpuu' move is an obvious play on the hurricane kick (functioning closer to Guy's rendition of the move).
- SNK Boss: The original versions made by OGGY are this in spades. The first version is especially this considering that it can take on the likes of the aforementioned Rare Akuma with pretty even footing.
- Trash Talk: Zero-Sennin's incarnation gave her some win quotes that places her squarely into arrogant kung fu guy territory.
- Wave Motion Gun: 'Beam' is the lesser version of Saikuron, and both go across the entire screen.
- Wrestler in All of Us: She is strong enough to hoist someone up into the air and slam them back down. Her Voltekka super while piloting her mech is an electric piledriver too.
Eiji Shirow
A son of the mafia, Eiji rejected his origins and walked away to find a life of his own, changing his last name. His rage makes him developed a hidden power: to produce flames from his own body. He became part of NESTS thanks to Igniz, which tricked him about bring to life his supposely dead girlfriend (sort of, as the form of her clone) if he became one of his henchmen. Now, after know the truth of Megumi being alive (not a clone) and experimenting with her, Eiji goes against Igniz for a personal vendetta.
The first original character made by Rikard (coding) and Orochi Dark Cloud (spriting), which ended with more characters that became part of the same story, included Megumi and her younger brother Rikard.
- Archnemesis Dad/I Hate You, Mafia Dad/Abusive Parents: Kazuya Kazeyama. He killed his mother and blamed Eiji for her death, lying that she died when she gave birth to him.
- Oedipus Complex: This finally happens when Eiji heard a telephone conversation of Kazuya about his mother's death and finally knew the truth. Then face Kazuya, who were almost to kill him, but Eiji actived his hidden fire powers for first time. And he used properly burning his father to the ashes.
- Battle Couple: Eiji and Megumi Shinigami.
- Creator Cameo: Rikard himself, part of the story as Megumi's younger brother, first as part of In-Universe's Eiji story to be later developed as a separate character as Megumi herself.
- Expy: Of The King of Fighters's fire users (Kyo Kusanagi, Iori Yagami and K'), having powers very similar to them.
- Also, without the jacket, Eiji looks a lot like k9999.
- Iconic Outfit: His green and black outfit with the dark green scarf, given by Megumi.
- I Will Find You: Igniz, for convince him of being part of NESTS' henchmen and for experiment with Megumi.
- Love Makes You Evil: Eiji became one of Igniz's henchmen with the promise of create a clone of Megumi and so 'reviving' his dead lover without knowing Megumi was alive as a guinea pig for NESTS' experiments.
- Mafia Prince: His real name is Eiji Kazeyama, son of mafia lord Kazuya Kazeyama, a title he's not proud at all, so he changed his last name to live a normal life.
- Revenge Before Reason: First against his father and later against Igniz, not to mention anyone vinculated to them, including friends, which converts Eiji in The Killer in Me.
- Shout-Out: In-Universe. To hide his birth's last name (related with the mafia), he called himself as his favourite comic artist.
- His father's name, Kazuya, which also is his Archnemesis Dad and a mafia leader.
- Not to mention Igniz and NESTS as part of Eiji's story.
- Updated Re-release: Mexican spriter NiO KuSaNaGi resprited Eiji with the permission of Rikard and released a separated SFF with new sprites more stylish than the original ones by Orochi Dark Cloud. Until now these sprites are the most preferred by the fans, even when they're offline and hard to find on the net.
- Recently NiO announced that he's making a new spritesheet for Eiji, so a new SFF (or even a new coded version) for Eiji is on the works.
Maxine
Character created by Maximo Perez, sprited and coded by Andres Borghi
She's truly outrageous.
This character is notable for being the first commissioned Mugen character ever. She's super girly, unlike Borghi's more well-known characters in The Black Heart.
- Assist Character: Her strongest Hyper Move has her summon David from 'Renderotica' to beat up the opponent.
- Color Motif: Definitely pink.
- Everything's Precious with Puppies: Her Puppy Army Hyper Move sends, well, a bunch of puppies to mow down her opponent. One of her win poses has her throwing a treat to a puppy and petting it.
- Leitmotif: Her creator posted her Mugen video with the Jem Theme as the background music
- Make Me Wanna Shout: The Super Mic Hyper Move has Maxine scream into a microphone, emitting a sound blast from a giant speaker.
- Mistaken Identity: Not to be confused with Ryanide's Narayan Maxime, also just known as Maxime.
- She's Got Legs: She puts her legs to good use with her Mulitkicks and Rockette attacks.
- Shout-Out: Of Jem, mostly for one of her palettes which changes her brown hair into pink, as well her Super Mic Hyper Move.
- Super Cute Super Powers: She's extremely feminine, with her Hyper Moves accentuating this with a pink background and sparkles.
XXX
A man who died and revived as a Made of EvilLiving Shadow who wants to Take Over the World. Another original character made by Basara-kun first as an experiment but later having his own plot and related characters like 'XXX2' (a Shotoclone who's a follower and the second in charge) and 'Blizzard' (An Ice Person karateka which was big brother of the original persona before he died), all of them also made by Basara-kun.
- Doppelgänger Attack: XXX can summon shadow clones to attack the enemy for him.
- Expy: Of Noob Saibot (and also a homage.) Also, he used Jimmy sprites and even some of his moves, as well NeoGeo Battle Coliseum's K' voice.
- I Am Legion: XXX is known as the leader of other shadow fighters as seen in his poses and in XXX2 ones. There's a woman (MOTW's B. Jenet with Shiki's voice) and a big guy (Hulk with Shigen's voice) which are also part of this army, possibly a XXX3 and XXX4 if his creator decides to make both as separate characters instead just as cameos they're now.
- Invisibility: The palette no.12 makes XXX invisible via coding, so only you can see the clones he releases but not him. Also this works if you played with his main palette (pitch black) in darker (or mostly black) stages.
- No Name Given: According to Basara-kun, the name is because he doesn't have one after being converted into a shadow.
- Not What It Looks Like: The XXX name is not refered to Porn or something NSFW, and isn't after xXx either.
- The Remake: Not being satisfied with the first version, Basara-kun remade completely XXX and the new version not just plays better and improve all the things first version had wrong, also included a completely different mode with new moves and one of them is a homage to Noob Saibot.
- Shotoclone: XXX2 was made as this, with modified versions of these moves, a Kamehame Hadoken as a super and the ability of release shadow clones just as XXX. Also, used SFA's Ken sprites as well some modified ones by The Dreamslayer, which were more known for being used on Reu's Evil Ken (and mistaken for older users as a unauthorized edit from this character and cleared by The Dreamslayer himself.)
- Switch to Color: This can be done thanks to palettes, which are darker colors, but colors anyway.
- That Man Is Dead: Once he was Blizzard's little brother. Now he was converted into shadows, that man doesn't exist anymore.
- Videogame Dashing: XXX has an Air Dashing in a similar way than Guilty Gear characters.
Vera Trappz
Created by MrPr1993
A woman with a beartrap for a head, who has an arsenal of strange attacks.
- Breath Weapon: Her Chomp Fire special, where she fires a fireball from her mouth while Her hyper move Chomp Beam has her instead fire a beam.
- Detachment Combat: She can remove her head and let it go towards the opponent. It also explodes upon contact. Her Hyper variation instead releases a huge size version of her head.
- Hair Decorations: Vera wears a big bow.
- Hartman Hips: She's got pretty wide hips.
- Man Bites Man: Having a beartrap for a head, some of her moves involve biting.
- Megaton Punch: Her Windup Punch if charged long enough.
- Rubber Woman: Few of her moves involve resizing her limbs to attack. Her intro also has her drop down from the top screen with her arms stretched.
- White Gloves: Wears them in her fingerless hands.
Teaf's/Tifu's Characters
Five obscure characters originating in M.U.G.E.N. as playable characters purely designed by Teaf: Shartel, Ferir, Rucheca, Grizela, and Harmir. They are not without haters but they are very much beloved: they are completely original creations of the author in virtually every way, boast clean and high resolution graphics except for one character in terms of sprites, and a decent amount of lovely fanservice; but, they're also furries — which are already despised by quite a few communities, said fanservice almost borderlines on NSFW in ways uncomfortable for some players (with two characters officially having explicitly NSFW fanservice), and they are also notorious for being massively powerful characters in the hands of an expert(s) or with the A.I. at its most powerful. They all have a combo system superior to Dragon Claw's (even Grizela), perfect guards that increase their energy gauge, critical hit capacity, and a 4-bar energy gauge completely separate from the 3 bar hyper gauge that is responsible for EX Special Moves, parry shields that create a window of intangibility after performing them, combo breaker bursts, combo cancels, and Fairy Fire assists. Said AI - while capable of being lowered, is also an absolute pain to deal with on higher difficulty settings. With all of this, they are all essentially to M.U.G.E.N. as Fox McCloud is to Super Smash Bros. Melee since they're nowhere near easy to master and they are interesting and rewarding characters for doing so. Any personal information on them can be found on the Fanatail website and Teaf's other websites (but you should at least be able to understand or translate Japanese). A future candidate to join the other girls in M.U.G.E.N. is currently known as 'Lazlotte/Razurotte', the devil's daughter with mismatched eyes.Shartel/Shall Till
なかなか腕が立つようだが…今回はオレの勝ちだな
A bestial, humanoid mercenary who likes to travel far and wide.
- Amazonian Beauty/Statuesque Stunner: She's the only girl shown with any form of muscle and her sprites are scaled up so that she is taller than the rest of the girls. This has made her quite tall as a result.
- Ass Kicks You: Her focus attack.
- Badass Adorable: A cute cat girl lugging around a large sword and is an effective mercenary.
- CuteCat Girl: Confirmed to be this by her Serval Lunge attack (for reference a serval is an African wild cat).
- Barbie Doll Anatomy: A few palettes invoke this, but it's ultimately subverted.
- BFS: Her weapon of choice; it's way smaller than most of the more famous examples but it's still much bigger than real swords and strong enough to create tremors.
- Boobs of Steel: Not as much as Grizela below her but she counts. She does have muscle unlike the dragon girl so this trope is not as prevalent.
- Fantastic Racism: Against witches and other magical beings due to her difficulty against them when on mercenary missions. The total opposite of her creator.
- Friendless Background: Grew up in the wilderness by herself. It's said that while she's self-sufficient and self-reliant, she's a bit lonely.
- Good Scars, Evil Scars: A small heroic one on her face.
- High-Pressure Blood: Her sword attacks involve this. Justified since it is a bladed weapon that she's using.
- The Last of These Is Not Like the Others: Order-inverted; low resolution spritework compared to the others, she just screams 'the first character made'.
- Ms. Fanservice: Given her creator this shouldn't be a surprise, and she's almost as much as the two others below her (Grizela and Harmir). She invokes this trope on others with her Shartel Buster if they have the compatible sprites.
- Shameless Fanservice Girl: Grew up mostly without clothes (they were more or less a decoration to her) and reluctantly wears as much as she normally does in the presence of others.
- Muscles Are Meaningful: She'd need those muscles of hers to lug around that BFS.
- SNK Boss: Unlike the rest of the girls, she doesn't seem to have any trade offs and she is very close to being a true Lightning Bruiser.
- Golden Super Mode: The most basic form of this trope; enhanced strength, speed, endurance, and a full Energy Gauge upon round start (formerly a constantly regenerating one) which becomes the standard for the rest of the girls to build upon for their own variations.
- The Tease: Much like Grizela in a sense based on official artwork.
- The Voiceless: Barring voice patches.
- Walking Swimsuit Scene: She wears what looks to be a red one under her normal clothes. Midnight Bliss removes everything but said swimsuit if used on her.
- Wrestler in All of Us: A Suplex Finisher with a super 'buster' finisher similar to Grizela's Dragon Buster.
Ferir/Ferill
楽しかったぁ、また遊ぼうね!
A woodland resident who while cheerful and playful is far from helpless.
- Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal: Her head accessories.
- Ass Kicks You: Her focus attack that she can perform in midair (with different properties).
- Author Avatar: That guy that she can summon in battle as a hyper move? That would be Teaf (or one of them to be precise). She happens to be good friends with him.
- Badass Adorable: Very capable of fighting like the others and she's decidedly the token mini moe of the group.
- Brats with Slingshots: Dual/Sling Shot has her pull out one such item and fire a seed or two at her opponents. Dual Shot is slower to fire than Sling Shot but covers more area by virtue of firing two seeds.
- Dishing Out Dirt: She kicks sand/dust at enemies for Dust Splash, kind of like Felicia. She can also kick around her Vine Trap seed attack this way.
- Fragile Speedster: Not to the extent of Harmir below her but she fits the bill perfectly.
- Ground Pound: A stall-then-fall foot dive.
- Half-Dressed Cartoon Animal: She's of the Bare-Bottomed type, but she's covered in thick fur from her hips down that makes her look less fanservicey than she is (a huge step up from the otherHalf-Dressed Cartoon Animal).
- Ms. Fanservice: Almost completely inverted. Barring her open vest and how she's in no way flat-chested in spite of her small stature (with minor boob shots from below or the sides), she has no NSFW artwork to her name unlike the rest of the girls; the closest to NSFW she's gotten in official art is bending over with fully covered-up lower body facing the screen.
- Stripperific: Played straight with the open vest and lack of bottomwear (not that she really needs to for the latter with the fur she has) but subverted for her Midnight Bliss outfit which gives her a normal looking dress. Either way she's decidedly less so than the others.
- Muscles Are Meaningful: You've read the Fragile Speedster entry right?
- Nature Lover: It should be obvious just by looking at her and her moveset.
- Green Thumb: Of the moves that aren't kick or scratch based, they utilize plants to a small extent (Vine Trap - a seed laid down for unsuspecting opponents, and Spirit of Fanatail Forest).
- Nature Spirit: Her other hyper move that Teaf summons. This one is the spirit of the Fanatail Forest called Yggdrasil and is Ferir's most powerful summon: it heals Ferir while it is out (a rarity for fighting games) and attacks her opponents with sharp roots protruding from the ground.
- Older Than They Look: She's actually an adult herself, and she rather dislikes being around kids for too long (in a non-villainous manner).
- SNK Boss: Very much like Harmir below thanks to similar playstyles. She is unbelievably fast in movement and attacking speed, therefore one will have a hard time trying to wait for an opening or trying to chase her down, and Yggdrasil heals her as long as she is out (a rarity for fighting games) and attacks on her behalf.
- Golden Super Mode: Strengthened attacks, speed, and endurance, a full Energy Gauge at the start of a match, permanently active Magic Fang and Vampiric Claw, Yggdrasil shows up at the start of the fight and attacks sparsely before the big move, she's got it made for her.
- Status Buff: Two of them that only work for her scratch attacks; Magic Fang - a buff that slightly increases her base damage output but vastly increases the damage she does to blocking foes, and Vampiric Claw - a buff that drains Hyper energy from her opponents.
- Trademark Favorite Food: Tree nuts.
- The Trickster: She is described as mischievous. Sounds like another bunny we know.
- The Voiceless: Barring voice patches.
- Wolverine Claws: She possesses a moveset that is made for extensive usage of her scratch based attacks.
Rucheca/Rusheka
ふーん、少しはやるようね。私の使い魔候補にいれてあげてもいいわよ?
A magess who hails from a Fanatail Magic Academy and her magic is second to none.
- AmbiguouslyToken Human/Cute Monster Girl: Thanks to her earsand her fangs, we're not sure what she is. She could be a mutated human, but it's highly likely that she's not (probably an elf given her powerful affinity with magic).
- Our Demons Are Different: While other high-level magicians are content with pulling rare creatures from other worlds to serve as their 'championing demon', Rucheca prefers looking for alternate realities to find another version of herself to serve the same role. Whether this makes her a very human-looking demon or not is up for grabs.
- Attack Reflector: One of her specials is a quick mirror of ice that reflects projectiles (the EX variation lasts much longer). God help the poor soul who fired multiple projectiles at her.
- Badass Adorable: The best mage in all of Fanatail period. Cute to boot too.
- Barbie Doll Anatomy: Subverted in her original palettes and in general but it can be invoked.
- Berserk Button: Hot blooded men get no sympathy from her and piss her off very easily]]. Grizela appears to also trigger a few others often when they argue and fight.
- Big Ol' Eyebrows: Smaller than Grizela's but bigger than the rest's.
- Does Not Like Milk: This might be explained by being lactose intolerant.
- Grin of Audacity: She does this in her intro (a look that sums her up perfectly) and also when she inflicts Mystic Illusion on her enemies.
- Lesbian Vampire: No official word on her sexual orientation or her species, but she gives off the impression thanks to one little detail, her Mystic Illusion attack; it is her equivalent of Demitri Maximoff's Midnight Bliss to the letter (all while she smiles at her handiwork).note
- Magic Missile Storm: Her ultimate attack named Elemental Storm defines this trope and it hits everyone on the screen (like Pokemon's earthquake).
- Awesome, but Impractical/Difficult, but Awesome: zig-zags between the two tropes. Getting to pull off this move is generally a pain and as such it is often used as a last resort; to get the elemental buffs one hyper bar must be sacrificed, and there are three elemental buffs, meaning an entire hyper gauge must be consumed, and the move itself takes one hyper bar to execute in addition to the buffs you've activated. Four hyper bars in total must be used up for this move, performing the move leaves you vulnerable for an attack, and while Rucheca can charge her hyper gauge and get the energy she needs doing this is quite a chore. This is compensated of course by dealing massive damage and must be either blocked or dodged since it hits the entire screen. In her Golden Super Mode though, it is far less impractical and/or difficult by any measure and is straight-up overpowered to where it is virtually a One-Hit Kill every time.
- Ms. Fanservice: She shows quite a lot of skin by default even with her mage robes on, and her other palettes zig-zag between even more revealing and somewhat modest (at best it'll look like she's wearing a painted-on spandex suit). Her Midnight Bliss outfit had gone from simply removing her mage robes to a high-cut pajama shirt to the traditional sailor fuku. She also invokes fanservice on others by way of her Mystic Illusion hyper Move.
- Fanservice Pack: Rucheca was smaller in her earlier sprites and looked pretty stylized, but she has recently been made to look older, taller, and thinner if only by a little (making her physique look proportionately closer to humans). It's also about this time that she's become more Gainaxy than usual and her Midnight Bliss state was changed from simply removing everything but her bikini to the high cut pajama shirt (even though the pajama shirt ended up getting changed).
- Full-Frontal Assault/Naked in Mink: She ditches her bikini while keeping her outer mage robe articles on her, exposing her intimates to the elements yet still being more clothed than everyone else. Go find it if you want.note
- Muscles Are Meaningful: How about having no physical attacks and being thinner than the rest (barring Ferir)? She's said to dislike both gym class and training camp (which would explain a lot).
- The Napoleon: C'mon, look at her; she practically screams this trope. She's the second shortest of the girls, is insecure about her height, and is very ill-tempered (though a recent sprite revamp made her a bit taller).
- Pride: She fits this bill for good reason. Rucheca is described as among the best (if not the best) magi in a very prestigious magic academy which happens to have magi from all over Fanatail. This got to the point where fellow top-class magi and even some of the instructors were scared of her vast magic potential. Her potency of magic include buffs to her already powerful magic that do not disappear over time, the power to unleash a brutal maelstrom of fire, lightning, and ice, the ability to steal lifeforce and energy from others, and she can completely alter another person's entire look or even their biological sex. This has gone to her head, becoming incredibly arrogant as a result and pointing her nose down at everyone else, making it quick and easy for her to make enemies.
- Smug Smiler: A frequent offender of this trope, sometimes pointing her pointer finger upwards in a mocking gesture.
- Regenerating Mana: One that fills up the Energy Gauge and the Hyper Gauge.
- SNK Boss: For a magical and projectile oriented user it is surprising that she ends up as one of these. She has a superior zoning game that is outright infuriating to deal with and she can spam her special moves at an alarming frequency.
- Golden Super Mode: Give her raw damage and speed boosts, take her elemental status buffs and increase their potency even further, including permanent magic buffs, the ability to regain her own health, and a full Energy Gauge going in, and you have a magicalSuper Saiyan.
- Status Buff: An attunement for each element (the ice attunement in particular allows Rucheca to randomly freeze her opponents solid) and they shave off half of the required energy to use EX Special Moves. And while they don't disappear overtime, her strongest attack depletes them completely. She also has Frozen Orb - a defensively-oriented one that she can cast on herself and/or her teammate.
- The Rival: Shown to be one with Grizela in this piece of official art. According to Teaf the two of them fight often over a lot of things and don't like each other much.
- Teleport Spam: Rucheca teleports instead of dashing (she hates dashing) which can become pretty annoying considering her difficulty. She can even do this in the air and has an EX variation of all things. And yes, all versions are spammable.
- Trademark Favorite Food: Any sweets and fruit will suffice to her.
- Vampiric Draining: Her normal ground grab does this (stealing hyper energy gauge to rub salt in the wounds further) and so does her Mystic Illusion hyper as stated above. Unlike Ferir she can naturally do this (as in without any buffs).
- The Voiceless: Barring voice patches.
- Walking Swimsuit Scene: Rucheca wears her swimsuit at all times underneath her mage clothing (which can look different depending on the palette used). By itself it used to be her Midnight Bliss outfit.
Grizela/Gurizera
最強の種族、ドラゴンの力をたっぷりと思い知らせてあげる
A humanoid dragon(?) with a sky-high pride and the physical prowess to match it.
- Ass Kicks You: Just her focus attack.
- Ms. Fanservice: She takes it Up to Eleven with her general attire, Dragon Busters, and her Midnight Bliss outfit. She takes the trope up to 'twelve' with her nude SFF and her other official art.
- Boobs of Steel: And how. They are her primary source of fanservice most likely because of this trope, almost constantly in motion, and the muscles are meaningless trope is in full play and exaggerated as a result. Under the effects of Midnight Bliss while fighting naked, they get to almost as big as her head as a result of not wearing clothes.
- Instant Awesome: Just Add Dragons!: And while she is not a giant, winged, fire-breathing monstrosity covered in scales (and her being a dragon is ambiguous), she is still an awesome draconic figure nonetheless.
- Shameless Fanservice Girl: Without a shadow of doubt.
- SexyHorny Dragons: In comparison to the other girls (who are moe) Grizela ditches the cuteness look and goes straight for sex appeal. She's aware of her status as this, taking pride and advantage of that fact too.
- Stripperific: Her default outfit. Her Midnight Bliss outfit is this in volumes as it's just two belts barely managing to cover her naughty bits.
- Full-Frontal Assault: An official patch has her fight completely naked. Find it yourself if you can.note
- The Tease: Hoo boy...
- Walking Swimsuit Scene: Her attire is a bikini, most likely to not hinder her much when she brawls.
- Big Ol' Eyebrows: Although not as large as most examples, it's especially noticeable.
- The Brute: Finesse and grace do not exist in her fighting vocabulary, throwing out simple yet powerful attacks. She notably cannot combo as much as the others but her combo game is easier to maintain in comparison. Also, she's not a particularly apt thinker herself.
- The Coats Are Off: She tosses off her cloak before beginning a fight (likely a nod to Zangief).
- Dishing Out Dirt: Megalith Crusher is an advancing crush attack with Grizela holding a huge rock in her hands. Megalith Throw is where Grizela tosses said rock instead.
- Expy: Seems like a mix of Zangief and Birdie in terms of gameplay and movelists, having a few command grabs like the two and showing an affinity for headbutts like the latter.
- Ground Pound: Dragon Stamp; it causes tremors that is pretty far reaching.
- Hoist by Their Own Petard: Hitting Grizela in the middle of her Cruel Headbutt will tack on more damage for her to deal to her opponent once she hits them.
- Make Me Wanna Shout: Her Dragon Roar hyper is a short ranged and powerful shout that blows away anything near her.
- Mighty Glacier: She is the strongest physical attacker between the five (with only her gold version topping her), but is the slowest and heaviest character; the ground itself shakes every time she lands, she doesn't have an extra jump function like the rest, her airdash gives her the shortest distance out of everyone else's and back when multiple airdashes existed she only had one, and her dashes are short hops rather than constant forward movement (or teleporting in Rucheca's case).
- Pride: She fits this bill and for good reason. Grizela is the self-proclaimed 'strongest dragon alive', and she can back up that boast and more. She will expect others to respect the dragon race and is pretty condescending as a whole (though not as bad as Rucheca). Vegeta would be an especially good male counterpart for her, especially considering the Super Saiyan and Golden Palette parallels.
- Professional Wrestling: She oozes this, being a grappling based fighter with her most powerful techniques involving grabbing the opponent with 360 degree motions. She also has three different body slam attacks to make her more like a professional wrestler.
- Regenerating Health: She will slowly start regaining her health if it falls below 200.
- Regenerating Mana: One that fills up the Hyper Gauge. Looks like she's learning a few pointers from theZ Fighters.
- SNK Boss: Not as much as the crowning number one example right below her but she still counts. The fact that she deals high amounts of damage to her enemies and more than most other characters made to this day makes her a dangerous foe to fight (critical hits are also in play for all girls, making Grizela that much more dangerous). Despite her low mobility she has little issue closing the distance or keeping foes at bay thanks to her tremor-inducing hip drop, her two headbutt specials, and her Megalith moves that force opponents to predict her next action. And while slow(er than the rest), her dashes grant her invincibility as she crosses over to the other side of her opponent while close to them.
- Golden Super Mode: Give her the full Energy Gauge starting a fight, take all of her stats and take them Up to Eleven to make her dish out ludicrous amounts of damage all around and can potentially go into one hit kill territory with critical hits, and allow her to refill her own health via the power charge, and you have yourself a golden monster girl-shaped juggernaut.
- Suplex Finisher: Her specialty. And she invokes Fanservice on compatible characters with her Dragon Buster (including herself and the other girls).
- Spinning Piledriver: She can do this just much like the more famous practitioners of the move but with a small twist, she goes upside-down once on the way up.
- The Rival: Shown to be one toward Rucheca in this piece of official art. According to Teaf the two of them fight often over a lot of things and don't like each other much.
- Trademark Favorite Food: If there's one thing her pride cannot protect herself against, it's melons (heh). This is so much that if you give her any she'll listen to whatever you have to say.
- Use Your Head: She has this as a strong punch and as two special moves (Brutal Charge which is a dashing headbutt and Cruel Headbutt which is a stationary headbutt, and they're both armored).
- The Voiceless: Barring voice patches.
- Vocal Dissonance: One common modified distribution that edited out her clothes before it was done officially also gave her the voice of a little girl, oddly.
Harmir/Hamiru
ファナテイルにお越しの際は、ハルピュイア魔法店をよろしくね!
A humanoid harpy who is the poster-girl and security guard of a harpy magic shop.
- Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal: Her hairclips. She also likes accessories (magical variants too) in general.
- Ass Kicks You: She has a focus attack and, as one would expect of her, she can do it midair.
- Author Appeal: Teaf seems to favor her considering that her introductory character video is more descriptive and longer than the others, being the best character to play as between the five, is advertised more than the others, and she has more official art compared to the rest. She's also the mascot of Teaf's/Fanatail's twitter account.
- Badass Adorable: She kicks the ass of those who mess with her shop or whenever, and she looks cute doing it too.
- Harping on About Harpies: She happens to be one of the cute examples thankfully.
- Barbie Doll Anatomy: Invoked with Harmir's various palettes but ultimately subverted with official art.
- Berserk Button: Theft in her shop or slandering it period is a guaranteed way of pissing her off and earning a subsequent ass-whooping.
- Blow You Away: Two attacks: Twirl Blast - a giant purple tornado which travels slowly and doesn't go far but has insane vertical coverage while hitting multiple times, and Crescent Gale - a pink crescent shaped wave kicked into the air that can be performed anywhere and also hits multiple times.
- Desperation Attack: While her Sky Ruler hyper move isn't exactly a desperation attack (it can be performed normally like other hypers), it does more damage the lower Harmir's health is.
- Expy: Gameplay-wise she's a mixture of Elena and Chun-Li from Street Fighter, exclusively using kicks for unarmed attackssince her wings can't attack themselves. She even has her own Lightning Leg expy dubbed 'Wild Pecker', and just like those two she has a nice pairof toned legs on her.
- Feather Fingers: Averted and summarily deconstructed; her wings are justwings, and this causes problems to the point that she has to ask someone (usually her boss) to help her get dressed. They're also the direct reason she is a kicking-basedextremity extremist.
- Feather Flechettes: She can however fire off three of her feathers enchanted with magic to turn them into projectiles called 'Luminous Feather'. Almost in lieu of her wings being useless for direct attacks, the projectiles are short-lived and - while covering three different directions in front of Harmir and repeatedly hit her opponents, don't go particularly far. They do stilt the opponent'(s)' ability to gain more power for they hyper gauge. The EX Variation does not disappear at all however and hits the opponent(s) many times while pushing them away from Harmir.
- Fragile Speedster: She is faster and more agile than even Ferir but her damage output is particularly low outside of her Super Moves, meaning she has to string long combos to do high damage unlike most of the other girls. She has the option to increase her power with her 'Eagle Heart' buff when available.
- Ground Pound: This comes up as a stall-then-fall foot dive and Sky Ruler's finisher is one of two variations: a foot dive or a butt stomp.
- Half-Dressed Cartoon Animal: Of the bare-bottomed variety. Unlike Ferir whose fur does a great deal on effectively concealing her intimates and sort of looking like furry pants, Harmir's feathers from the waist down look much closer to form-fitting spandex: her ass-cheeks are clearly visible and her Cleft of Venus often shows through her patch of pubic feathers. Official art sometimes goes as far to have her anus visible...
- Full-Frontal Assault: She decides to ditch her small bra too in an official patch — see if you can find it.note
- Implied Love Interest: She talks about her boss quite a bit, they're on her 'likes list', and doesn't mind when they're the ones helping her get dressed, so…
- Kung-Fu Wizard: Her fighting style is an effective synthesis of unarmed physical and magical combat prowess. As noted above her arms are just wings so they're relegated for movement so Harmir's legs pick up the slack double time, using them in a very quick-paced style for physical attacks and sometimes enhancing them with magic energy. Magic-wise, she is capable of phasing in and out of the battlefield with her 'Follow Wind' buff under certain palettes and is capable of utilizing three different projectile spells and activating two different buffs ('Follow Wind' which generally gives her a speed boost and the aforementioned phasing out boost and 'Eagle Heart' which gives her a raw power increase). Seeing as how she works in a magic shop and is shown to exercise often this wouldn't be far off the mark at all.
- The Last of These Is Not Like the Others: Presumably the last character made and she has quite an advanced playstyle compared to those before her.
- Mascot: In-universe, she's not only the poster girl for a harpy magic shop within Fanatail that she works for, she's the persistent security guard there. Out-of-universe, she serves as Teaf's/Fanatail's avatar on Twitter.
- Ms. Fanservice: Her default look is highlystripperific with a bra the size of Rucheca's and the aforementioned bottomlessness with occasional vagina and anus shots, making her more revealing than Grizela. The only other thing she's shown wearing outside of her Midnight Bliss state is a very loose apron with no bra underneath (her work clothes presumably). Sky Ruler's finishing blow's portrait lets the player know exactly what Harmir's point of appeal is. Last but not least, she can fight topless too. Of course, she's not as overall fanservicey as the number one example above her. The type of fanservice girl she qualifies as is either of the two tropes below.
- Innocent Fanservice Girl: She has no problems standing in her birthday suit and asking others to help her get dressed, although this is mainly because it's impossible to get dressed without Feather Fingers. However...
- Shameless Fanservice Girl: She generally gives off this impression based on the above standing around naked waiting for others to dress her, being the most revealing of Teaf's characters by far without nude patches involved, swinging her legs around as much and as wide apart from each other as she does including numerous vertical splits in her opponent'(s)' direction, and she can fight topless with both of her portraits giving her a smile on her face as opposed to the more serious look she has with her normal ones.
- Workout Fanservice: She fits this to a T with her portraits, her introduction animation, and her taunt having her do vertical splits (i.e. doing the splits while standing on one leg). No wonder her legs are so fit; she must work out often (and she'd have to in order to guard her store).
- Nice Shoes: Her boots are among her favorite things.
- Status Buff: They're also stated to grant the user boosts to their power and speed. Said boosts are 'Eagle Heart' and 'Follow Wind' respectively.
- Pimped-Out Dress: Using Midnight Bliss (or any variation of the move thereof) puts an extremely fancy and conservative Victorian-era dress on her.
- Primal Fear: Of the dark.
- Rain, Rain, Go Away: She's not fond of rain. If you remember birds' problems of flying when damp, this would be justified. That and she doesn't wear that much clothing anyways, meaning she'd get soaked.
- SNK Boss: Holy Fucking Hell, Harmir with the highest A.I. is just one of the absolute crowned winners of this trope in M.U.G.E.N, period, and she's not a character who outright cheats or is completely broken from the get-go. She has effective counters against virtually anything thrown against her and she's the only character between the five of them all capable of zero-to-death combos even in her base form.
- Difficult, but Awesome: Yet, as with other SNK Bosses, it is not that easy to pull off her combos like that; she's really difficult to master to compensate for how insane she is, but she is incredibly worth it.
- Golden Super Mode: She'd do the Super Saiyans proud with her enhanced strength and speed, permanently active status buffs boosting her raw stats even further, and a regenerating Energy Gauge sky rocketing her into nigh-untouchable, nigh-unstoppable territory.
- Teleport Spam: She has access to a teleport move with several followups that are different on the ground and in the air. You can guess how that will go. Her dashes make her go invisible when she's using 'Follow Wind' and a special palette and she can't be hit either, essentially turning into this trope.
- Trademark Favorite Food: Lemonade and parfaits.
- The Voiceless: Barring voice patches.
- Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Oh the irony.
- Wrestler in All of Us: A special move grab and its counter follow-up both result in some body slam.

Main characters[edit]
Mugen[edit]
Voiced by: Kazuya Nakai (Japanese); Steven Blum (anime), Liam O'Brien (PS2 video game dub) (English)
Mugen (ムゲン(無限))is a 19-year-old man who is one of the main protagonists of the series. He was born in a penal colony on the Ryukyu Islands which in the Edo period was a separate kingdom with close ties to Japan's Satsuma domain. Incidentally, Mugen writes his name using the infinity symbol (∞), a pun on his name, 無幻 which is a homophone of the Japanese word for infinite. His Japanese is quite rough and 'Yankī'; and he is illiterate until later in the show. Little is known about Mugen's childhood and he states that it has been a long time since he can remember what it is like to have parents in episode 20, 'Elegy of Entrapment, Verse 1.' The blue tattoos on his wrists and ankles indicate that he was once in prison.[1] The circumstances of his imprisonment are initially unclear, but it is later verified that he was to be executed for engaging in piracy.
As an over-confident antihero, Mugen is fond of fighting and has a tendency to pick fights for petty reasons. His pride getting the better of him mosttimes. In spite of it all, he is shown to have some redeeming qualities throughout the show. Character designer Kazuto Nakazawa stated in an interview: 'When I was doing character design, the most difficult one was Mugen, as I expected. I'm pretty sure that as far as the director's image went, he probably was thinking of someone like a 'rapper who acts like a bad guy.' But the way Mugen acts is relatively based on his core conviction.'[2]
Mugen's highly unorthodox swordplay and a fighting style based on breaking – dubbed 'champuru kendo' (Champloo Kendo in English) and ostensibly developed by himself – taking bits and pieces from all forms of martial arts and making up the rest on-the-go as he fights his opponents, make him a force to be reckoned with.[3] But despite the unpredictable nature of the fighting, it was pointed out in Episode 25, that his improvisational style, exposes his limits easily, giving experienced fighters the knowledge to beat him. He carries two blades, his principal weapon a unique sword with a curved blade and a hilt with two prongs sheathed across his back and the other a small tantō concealed at the end of his scabbard (only resorted to as a trump card). His main weapon appears to be an amalgamation of the Okinawan sai and Japanese katana. Mugen also has a tendency to parry attacks with the steel base of his geta.
Mugen often states his desire to fight and kill Jin once their quest is over, and Jin returns this desire and on the numerous occasions where Mugen is going to face a strong opponent and possibly risk his life, Jin reminds Mugen that 'I will be the one to slay you'. Mugen does likewise. In the final episode, exhausted and near death, Jin and Mugen finally do have their battle, but both their swords break when they clash. Afterwards Mugen states that he doesn't want to kill Jin, another sentiment that Jin returns.
Jin[edit]
Voiced by: Ginpei Sato (Japanese); Kirk Thornton (English)
Jin (ジン(仁)) is a 6-foot tall, 20-year-old man who is one of the main protagonists of the series. He wields a Katana and Wakizashi, and spent the majority of his life training in kenjutsudojos. Unlike Mugen, it is legal for him to carry a daisho, as he is of the samurai class. His swords have a lightning and twin-eyed design on the tsuba. He wears traditional hakama and gi in indigo blue patterned with a white diamond kamon made up of four small white diamonds. His kamon closely resembles that of the great Takeda Clan, leading to speculation that his family origins may be of nobility.[4] He wears glasses but Fuu states that they are 'for show', indicating Jin wears them as an accessory rather than actually needing them.
When he was eighteen, he was to be assassinated in his sleep by his sensei, Mariya Enshirou, at Kariya Kagetoki's insistence. However, Jin killed Mariya in self-defense and fled the dojo, becoming a ronin. His death is sought by former classmates and other fame-seekers. Mujushin was a real sword-fighting dojo, and Mariya Enshirou is known to have been the third master — although the circumstances of his death are unclear.[5]
Jin is highly devoted to upholding Bushido and is in fact named after jin (benevolence), one of the seven samurai virtues. Jin is usually taciturn and unusually collected. He is an extremely skilled swordsman, using swift, refined, orthodox moves of the Mujushin Kenjutsu discipline, making him the perfect foil for Mugen. Jin is also a skilled Shogi player with a sharp memory, as demonstrated when he reproduces a shogi board position after his opponent 'accidentally' upsets the board.
In the last episode of the series, he confesses to both Fuu and Kariya that he has spent his entire life without ties to others. He lived only for his sword and no master; saying that the lords of that time have no sense of honor, only caring about self-preservation. But he seems to change during his travels with Fuu and Mugen, saying that they are his 'first friends.'
Fuu[edit]
Voiced by: Ayako Kawasumi (Japanese); Kari Wahlgren (English)
Fuu (フウ(風)Fū) is a 15-year-old girl and the female protagonist of the series. In her childhood before the beginning of the series, her dad left her and her mom for an (initially) unknown reason. Without her father around to support them, Fuu and her mother led a difficult life until Fuu's mom died of illness. After a not-so-successful stint as a teahouse waitress, she saves Mugen and Jin from death and recruits them as her bodyguards to help her on a quest. She is searching for the 'Samurai who smells of Sunflowers', but never explains what a sunflower smells like or what the man looks like. Mugen and Jin are often reminded of their life-debt to her when they wish to fight each other, much to their chagrin.
She is a surprisingly big eater (in one episode she entered an eating contest and was one of the last two remaining, shocking all the spectators; she might have won, except for an unintentional forfeit), has a bright and compassionate personality, and is strongly prone to accidents, getting lost, and trouble although she is quite practical. She often puts on a front of being more worldly and experienced than she actually is so as not to appear completely ingenuous in front of her bodyguards. Fuu wears a deep pink kimono with a pattern of flowers and carries a matching tantō. Attached to the tantō are three netsuke: a skull (a Christian pendant from her father), a pair of dice and a dog. She's almost always seen wearing what looks like pink polish on both her nails and toenails. Her name, Fuu (フウ), is short for fuukinchou (フウキンチョウ), which is Japanese for 'tanagers', small, brightly colored birds.
Secondary characters[edit]
The Samurai who smells of sunflowers[edit]
Voiced by: Kouji Nakata (Japanese); Doug Stone (English)
The 'samurai who smells of sunflowers' (向日葵の匂いのする侍himawari no nioi no suru samurai) is Kasumi Seizō, a Christian samurai who played a leading role in the Shimabara Rebellion. His death is sought by the Shogunate as a result of this betrayal.
The objective of the trio's quest, he is revealed later on in the series to actually be Fuu's father. He left Fuu and her mother to save them from anti-Christian persecution (he was a major proponent of Christianity, considered heretical at the time). Fuu, however, thinks that his abandoning the family was unforgivable. Her only memory of him is a departing figure shifting through a field of sunflowers.
He was relentlessly pursued by the Shogunate, but succeeded in evading them. When Fuu began to search for him, the Shogunate had her followed. She led them right to him, sick and dying in a hut on Ikitsuki Island. Kariya Kagetoki arrives just after Fuu's tearful reconciliation with her father and kills him right in front of her.
Mariya Enshirou[edit]
Voiced by: Makio Inoue (Japanese); Peter Spellos (English)
The renowned 'Slayer of a Thousand Men' and third master of the Muju. He has perished by the show's beginning, but features prominently in flashbacks. Both his character and the dojo were actual historical entities, albeit relatively obscure.[5] According to Samurai Champloo, he intended to turn the dojo into an academy for training assassins, under pressure from Kariya Kagetoki, but received passionate opposition from his finest pupil and heir, Jin.
In Episode 25, Jin remembers a flashback of a conversation with Mariya about turning the Dojo into an assassins academy. Jin said if it becomes that, then Mujushin Kenjutsu would no longer be a martial art. Change was the only way to survive in this day and age, Mariya lamented. In Kariya Kagetoki's view, if Jin would not see change, he would have to be erased from the picture. Jin would have to be killed in his sleep. However, Jin killed his attacker in the dead of the night, discovering to his horror that it was Mariya. Proudly before passing away, Mariya remarked, 'You've improved tremendously, Jin.'
Given the identical kamon on their kimonos, Jin and Mariya were either relatives or Mariya adopted Jin.
Inspector Manzo[edit]
Voiced by: Unshō Ishizuka (Japanese); Michael McConnohie (English)
A recurring character, Inspector Manzo, known also as 'The Saw', is a lampoon of Hanzo Itami. Aside from the main trio, Momotaro and Ichiemon the announcer, he is probably the only other character shown in multiple episodes (discounting flashbacks and multiple-part episodes). His persistence and enthusiasm are not without humorous results. As he is a law enforcer, he carries a sort of billy-club with him wherever he goes and is apparently able to use it to perform calisthenics. In all three episodes in which he appears, he plays the narration for the part or all of the story. Oddly enough, his narration transcends time, as he has narrated about future events which he could not feasibly be alive long enough to know about, like Vincent van Gogh, the popularity of baseball throughout America today, the Zen movement in the 1960s, and even commentary on the modern-day Japanese views on sexuality contemporary to the show's airing.
Oshaberi Ichiemon[edit]
Voiced by: Isshin Chiba (Japanese); Dave Mallow (English)
Ichiemon, also known as 'Ichiemon the Announcer', serves mostly in the role of comic relief, providing amusing commentary during the eating contest in episode 6 and the baseball game in episode 23. His name 'Oshaberi' literally translates to 'honorable talker' and is meant to imply that he is a gossip.[6] He wears a strange hat that appears to be a newspaper folded up like origami.
Sasaki Ryujiro[edit]
Voiced by: Otoya Kawano (Japanese); Dave Wittenberg (English)
Sasaki Ryujiro (佐々木 龍) is the mentally unbalanced subordinate to Shibui Matsunosuke, the corrupt magistrate of an oppressed town, who assigns him to protect his brat of a son, Tomonoshin. Ryujiro's arm is chopped off by Mugen after the altercation in the teahouse, driving him over the edge. He has a ruthless sadism which predates the loss of his arm, claiming to have lost his humanity a long time ago and having no problem with killing and torturing his opponents. He burns the teahouse down in retaliation, inadvertently putting Fuu out of work and Jin and Mugen in prison. While Shibui Sr. (and his son) perish, Ryujiro survives and returns later to exact revenge on Mugen. He is strangled to death by Oniwakamaru for threatening Fuu's life.
Nagatomi Rikiei[edit]
Leader of the Nagatomi yakuza, ruthless and ambitious. He enlists Mugen as his partner after the former impresses him by sitting at his men's table, eating their food and beating them up. Keeps a chinstrap and sports Ray-Bans, a distinguishing part of his appearance. Killed by his personal yojimbo Ishimatsu for his wicked ways after Ishimatsu decides enough is enough.
Daigoro[edit]
Daigoro is the catalyst for the events that unfurl in Episodes 3 and 4. After a dramatic loss at one of Rikiei's gambling establishments, he is pressured to give up either the deed to his business or his daughter, Osuzu, in order to cover his debt. He pleads with Kawara Heitarou for help, suggesting that Rikiei's establishments practice dishonesty. Kawara refuses, citing a lack of evidence. Daigoro has no choice but to give up his store, but Ishimatsu takes Osuzu as well after Sosuke tries to intervene.
Osuzu[edit]
Voiced by: Sayuri (Japanese); Karen Strassman (English)
Daigorou's demure daughter; she is quite something to look at. Before she is forcibly procured by Ishimatsu, as an excuse to make up for Sousuke's insolence, she was the latter's tutor. She is put to work with in one of Rikiei's brothels, where she meets Fuu (who is also being forced into prostitution because of bad fortune) and they become friends. Both are emancipated after Rikiei's demise. She appears in the 3rd and 4th episodes: 'Hellhounds For Hire (Part 1)' and 'Hellhounds For Hire (Part 2)'.
Kawara Sōsuke[edit]
Voiced by: Mayumi Yamaguchi (Japanese); Darrel Guilbeau (English)
Heitarō's pubescent son, heir to the Kawara Clan's leadership. He is hasty and impetuous, not a surprise for his age and the shame his father has to endure. He has strong feelings for Osuzu, and intervenes when Ishimatsu comes to collect her father's business deed, succeeding only in getting her taken away, too. Joins forces with Jin to rescue her but fail as Mugen is guarding the brothel. The night after he goes to see Osuzu again and blows a gasket when a customer puts his hands on her. The man is a Nagatomi, but Sousuke does not know that when he draws his sword and stabs him to death. Heitarō commits seppuku on his account. Rikiei mocks Heitarō, while Sousuke defends him. Upon the Nagatomi Clan's defeat and his dad's suicide, he assumes his dad's position. He, along with his dad and Osuzu, appears in the 3rd and 4th episodes: 'Hellhounds For Hire (Part 1)' and 'Hellhounds For Hire (Part 2)'.
Kawara Heitaro[edit]
Voiced by: Hidekatsu Shibata (Japanese); Simon Prescott (English)
Known as 'The Merciful' despite being a yakuza head, he is poised, level-headed and traditional, running the yakuza to take a form of foster care for its young men who would otherwise be criminals. It is because of this, the unscrupulous Rikiei easily moves in and seizes control of the town. He dotes on Sosuke, his only son. After losing a dice duel to Rikiei (who may have cheated) and in an act that moves almost everyone, he sacrifices his life to ensure the future of the Kawara Clan. He appears in the 3rd and 4th episodes: 'Hellhounds For Hire (Part 1)' and 'Hellhounds For Hire (Part 2)'.
Ishimatsu[edit]
Ishimatsu is yojimbo to an influential yakuza boss, Rikiei. His considerable height, dark skin and a string of large Buddhist beads he wears around his neck are distinctive features. Rikiei offers Mugen a partnership after Mugen impresses him with his fighting skills. This does not sit well with Ishimatsu, and he and Mugen do not get along; barely past introductions they are attacking each other. Their duel is cut short by Rikiei, who wants to get down to business. Eventually, disillusioned by Kawara Heitarou's sacrifice, Ishimatsu cuts down Rikiei, and finishes his duel with Mugen. He suffers an honorable defeat. His manriki can be seen as a wild card, in the same light as Mugen's tantō.
Shino[edit]
Shino (also known as Kohana) was married to a gambler who fell in debt. To repay his debt, the gambler sold Shino to a brothel. On her last day of freedom, she meets Jin and helps him sell eels. Jin goes to see her at the brothel but gets beaten because he has no money. He returns the next day with a gold ryo that Mugen won. Jin also spends a night with her and presumably has sex with her. He helps her escape the next day, and sets her off on a boat to a women's sanctuary across the river. She appears in the 11th episode 'Gamblers and Gallantry'.
Zuikō[edit]
Voiced by: Shōzō Iizuka (Japanese); Bob Papenbrook (English)
A muscle-bound monk who gives the trio room and board in his temple in exchange for their menial services. He was once the master of the dojo that Shōryū trained in and became a monk as penance for his failure to save his pupil's soul. Makes a second prominent appearance in the Episode 12 flashbacks, possibly instructing Mugen on the art of Hakkei (how he knows anything about its workings is quite inexplicable, though it wouldn't be a stretch to assume he researched it).
It would seem that his giving room and board to the trio was not merely for their labor. In 'Disorder Diaries', he provided both Jin and Fuu with spiritual guidance, and Zuikō's predictive powers (evident by his telling them to fix the doors before Mugen actually broke them) could lead the viewer to believe that he predicted that Mugen would help his quest to end Ukon's path of destruction.
Ukon[edit]
Voiced by: Show Hayami (Japanese); Jeffrey Stackhouse (English)
Like Jin, Ukon (also known as Shōryū) was born into the samurai bloodline. He studied under Zuikou and became one of his most prized disciples. Ukon was sent on a voyage by the province's daimyō, but his ship met with disaster and capsized. Somehow, he ended up washed ashore in China. There, he encountered a 'mysterious martial art' known as Hakkei, and studied it vigorously under the tutelage of Shaolin monks. He returned to Japan a different man under a different name, Shōryū, and had become so different that he had no qualms about killing a fellow student in a simple training session, strongly believing that all fights are to the death.
After Zuikou expelled him, Shōryū wandered the continent searching for a new master, but no one would have him, labeling him a heretic. He became embittered as he felt his greatness deserved acknowledgment. He began murdering renowned samurai for sport, at the same time hoping to find a worthy opponent. The 'street killer' myth was built around him. During the duel with Mugen, Shōryū attempts to finish Mugen in the same manner; however, when Shōryū gets within striking distance to use his finishing move, Mugen springs his carefully laid trap, striking from a supposedly helpless position, killing Shōryū with a thrust from his previously concealed tantō.
Mugen's battle with Shōryū characterizes the uniqueness of his free-for-all fighting style he calls 'champuru kendo', swiping bits and pieces from all forms of martial arts thrown at him, as he was seemingly able to mimic and use Shōryū's ki technique to his own advantage, likely picked up in their first duel. This battle marks the first time Mugen ever faced an opponent he was unsure of defeating as stated by Jin.[7] Next to Kariya Kagetoki and Sara, Shōryū is easily one of the most powerful fighters in the Champloo universe. His stance and fighting style are markedly Shaolin. His discipline, Hakkei, makes use of ki. It is unknown if Shouryuu employs ki to strengthen his defenses, but he certainly uses it to greatly augment his offensive prowess. Already as quick as Mugen, if not quicker, he is able to project ki at a distance or even channel it through his sword. Furthermore, one blow from his palm is a fatal death touch.
Mukuro[edit]
Voiced by: Kiyoyuki Yanada (Japanese); Kim Strauss (English)
Wanted criminal, pirate captain, former cohort of Mugen. He carries a revolver tucked in his waistband. His clothing includes a sawtooth design, wristbands and ankle bandages, which Koza and a younger Mugen both share in appearance. Like his sister, Koza, he has a fairly swarthy complexion. He double-crossed Mugen at least once before and does it again. After their 'reunion', he convinces Mugen to rob a government ship with him, the spoils being 60,000 gold ryo. After Mugen and the pirates ram the government ship and kill most of the guards, Mukuro blows up the pirate ship with Mugen on board. He returns to shore on the (now empty) government ship, where he and his secret accomplice, a government official named Shiren, hoard the gold. Unfortunately, Koza is none too fond of her brother (according to her, he killed her mother), and engineers the double-cross into a triple-cross. He and Jin end up dueling. He fans two shots at Jin; however, Jin anticipates and evades them. Mukuro met his end when Jin sliced him across the chest, then stabbed him from behind seconds after drawing his katana.
Koza[edit]
Voiced by: Ai Maeda (Japanese); Stephanie Sheh (English)
Mukuro's perpetually gloomy younger sister. She has a fondness for Mugen that dates back to their days of piracy, though the feeling is not quite mutual. Koza isn't so much in love with Mugen as she is attached to him. This stems from her chronic dependency — she simply can't bear to be alone, which explains why she has remained with Mukuro all this time, even though he clearly repulses her. She devises a scheme to get rid of Mukuro and leave with Mugen, but as Mugen rejects her advances, she replaces him with Shiren. She neglects to inform Mugen what Mukuro has in store for him. After the ship Mugen is on explodes, she manipulates Jin and Mukuro into fighting, which ends in Mukuro's death. As she is leaving with Shiren, Mugen, having survived the explosion, confronts them and cuts Shiren down with a series of lightning-quick slashes despite being rigorously weakened. Koza begs him to kill her. He pays her no heed and continues walking, leaving her exactly as she didn't want to be: All alone.
It is disputable whether Koza is Mukuro's actual sister, as, aside from their skin tone, Fuu observes that they look nothing alike. Moreover, Koza states that Mukuro 'killed her mother,' not 'their' mother.
Shiren[edit]
Voiced by: Ken Narita (Japanese); Erik Davies (English)
A Shogunate official, infatuated with Koza. He becomes Mukuro's collaborator in double-crossing Mugen and keeping the gold for themselves. He is slashed dead by Mugen at the end of everything. As he and Mukuro are the only two people who know where the gold is hidden, it is never recovered.
Yatsuha Imano[edit]
Voiced by: Noriko Hidaka (Japanese); Michelle Ruff (English)
Yatsuha is a skilled ninja who is always barefoot (though has some type of sock-like covering on her feet that exposes the heel and toe areas) when in her ninja outfit. She first appeared working as a prostitute in a covert mission to break up a criminal operation counterfeiting coins. She is the daughter of Imano Jinpachi, a member of the Shogunate guard staff. Yatsuha came to the brothel one year ago. She is purchased by Mugen after winning a rock-paper-scissor game with Jin to see who will stay with her instead of several of her less attractive coworkers.
While Mugen is preparing himself for Yatsuha, she overhears a conversation about the counterfeiting through a wall. After failing multiple attempts to subdue Mugen, who thinks her actions are foreplay, Yatsuha resorts to tricking Mugen into helping her stop the counterfeiting operation by promising him a night of sex. Together they defeat the counterfeiting group and its leader Momochi Ginsa, rescuing their captives. When Mugen later tries to get Yatsuha to uphold the promise at the conclusion of the episode, she knocks him out cold with a block of wood. As Yatsuha and her partner Otawa Hankichi leave Mugen outside the town limits, she confesses to Hankichi that she has fallen in love with Mugen and intends on marrying him in the future.
Okuru[edit]
Voiced by: Akio Ohtsuka (Japanese); Richard Epcar (English)
An Ainu warrior whose village was struck by an epidemic and torched by the Matsumae clanHan. Overcome with rage, he killed the official who authorized the burning. He was arrested and incarcerated, but escaped before he could be executed. His weapon is unique, a modified crossbow, called a Chu-Ko-Nu, that can repeatedly fire bolts. He mistakes Mugen as part of the Matsumae Han (who, ironically, later mistake Mugen for Okuru) and attacks him. He withdraws after he realizes the error. Later, he saves Fuu after she plunges off a crag. Upon encountering Mugen again, they do battle, and Mugen remarks that he has the 'eyes of a dead man, like a severed head that doesn't know it's been cut off.' Their fight is interrupted by agents of the Matsumae Han, led by Tobata. Okuru is riddled by flaming arrows, but miraculously remains standing. Jin and Mugen slaughter the rest of the Matsumae Han agents, while Okuru wrenches an arrow out of his gut and stabs Tobata dead with it. Engulfed in flames, he leaps off a cliff into the river below. Mugen believes that Okuru is still alive.
Yukimaru[edit]
Yukimaru was a student of Mariya Enshirou before Jin killed him. Yukimaru contends that, unlike Ogura, he wants to take Jin's life not to avenge Enshirou but to make a name for himself. Unwilling to fight him, Jin takes a dive off the edge of a waterfall. Yukimaru is persistent and hunts him down once more. They clash katana, and Jin gives him one last chance to turn back. Yukimaru charges on. Jin runs him through. On his dying breath, shedding a tear, Yukimaru whispers that he only 'wanted to be like you.' Jin and Fuu bury him, and pray before his grave. When Fuu asks Jin about who he was, Jin replies Yukimaru 'was like a little brother'.
The crest on Yukimaru's kimono is identical to the kamon of the Hōjō clan.[8] Though the Takeda and Hojo clan were neighboring clans that often fought, they both did battle against Tokugawa and Nobunaga.[9] If Jin and Yukimaru are of the Takeda and Hojo clan, this might explain their more familiar relationship with each other.
Tobata[edit]
Commands the band of Matsumae Han officials sent to pursue Okuru. Clearly enjoys what he is doing, as evidenced by the smirk on his face when he (thinks he) finally has Okuru cornered. His allegiance is to his daimyō and cannot be swerved, as he declares that he 'has his orders', even after hearing that his superiors' motives might be less than honorable. Is stunned that Okuru is still on his feet after having been riddled by flaming arrows. He rushes forward with his katana drawn, intending to put an end to the enemy of the state. A dispassionate Okuru wrenches an arrow out his body and stabs Tobata to death with it.
Sara[edit]
Voiced by: Sakiko Tamagawa (Japanese); Megan Hollingshead (English)
A beautiful blind shamisen player and singer (Goze). Sara is always barefoot where the sense of touch in her feet help to make out the terrain because of her blindness. Mugen, Jin, and Fuu encounter Sara near the end of their journey. The quartet travel together for a while, and she reveals she has an illegitimate son that was sequestered from her, allegedly due to her blindness. She requests that one of the men to accompany her on her quest to find her son. Knowing of Mugen's unconcealed lust for Sara, Fuu reluctantly offers Jin, expecting him to reject the offer, but Jin calmly accepts out of a sense of duty. While crossing a narrow footbridge with Jin, Sara reveals that she is a Shogunate assassin and brandishes an elaborate kama-yari disguised inside her walking staff. The two engage in battle, with Sara quickly gaining the upper hand despite (or perhaps because of) her blindness, as she possesses a superhuman ability to perceive whenever an opponent telegraphs their movements. Jin is wounded twice, and finally, out of desperation, destroys the bridge's suspension, with both combatants falling into the river beneath them. After hearing of the collapse of the bridge, Fuu worries about the well-being of Jin and Sara, and she and Mugen turn around to search for their former companions. Shortly thereafter, they locate an unconscious Sara washed up on the riverbank. Mugen finds Sara's staff on the riverbank as well, and becomes suspicious of her after finding cut planks nearby.
Upon Sara's recovery, Mugen—having deduced her true nature and motives—returns her shamisen and concealed kama-yari staff with a thinly veiled remark about the 'tools of [her] trade'. Realizing she's been discovered, she offers to fight Mugen by the river. During their fight, Sara again grossly outmatches her opponent due to the superior range of her kama-yari vs. Mugen's katana and her ability to perceive his attacks almost even before he makes them. Mugen is badly wounded and incapacitated, but she relents from killing him when Fuu throws herself on top of him and begs Sara for mercy. That night, however, a Shogunate contact disguised as a pinwheel merchant coerces Sara into finishing her job by reminding her that her son's life hangs in the balance: if she fails to kill the trio, the Shogun's agents will kill her son instead. When one of his pinwheels stops spinning, she begins to doubt that her child is still alive. Nonetheless, Sara returns to the riverbank to engage Mugen in a final fight. Despite Jin's coaching on how to counter her sensory abilities, she proves superior once again and is presented with a window of opportunity to kill Mugen. However, she pulls back the swing of her kama-yari at the last moment, allowing Mugen's katana to strike her. In her last moments, she states that she realizes her son is long dead, and asks Mugen to continue living instead as he mourns her.
Sara is one of the strongest fighters in the series, able to split large boulders with her kama-yari and perfectly sense an opponent's movements despite her blindness. Sara's concealed yari weapon and blindness may be references to Zatoichi. She is one of the most powerful fighters in the series, one of only two (along with Kariya Kagetoki) to decisively dominate both Jin and Mugen in separate fights and the only fighter to utterly incapacitate Mugen, his death being forestalled only by Fuu's pleas for mercy.
Matagi[edit]
An old hermit who rescues Jin after the latter nearly drowns from the fight with Sara. Matagi brings him back to an old hut to recuperate. As Jin awakens he is offered a bowl of food, then denied it. Only joking, the hermit then places the bowl across the room from Jin allowing him to get it for himself. Jin painfully crawls towards it only to find it empty, and Matagi again laughing at him and observing his ability to move. Later, Jin finds Matagi outside standing in the water trying to catch fish with his bare hands, who explains his methods of entrusting oneself to the flow – a method later referred to as the 'Way of the Water' (although it doesn't exactly work the first time it is demonstrated).
As Jin is leaving, he thanks the hermit for the lesson (to teach a man to fish instead of to give him one), to which Matagi claims he didn't teach Jin anything. Jin is greatly surprised when he asks the hermit's name and his reply is, in a serious tone, Miyamoto Musashi. But the old man laughs it off, saying that couldn't be true and his real name is Johnny. Whether or not he is indeed the legendary swordsman is left up to the audience to decide (Samurai Champloo takes place after the Shimabara Rebellion of 1637-38, and not in the 1850s as previously speculated by others, therefore Musashi's cameo is plausible). His name has been officially given as Matagi.
Heike Shige[edit]
Voiced by: Tony Oliver
Heike Shige is the leader of a band of zombie-like workers, who have been mining for the legendary gold of the Heike clan for 500 years. Some unearthly quality of the area's mushroom population preserved them long after their bodies expired and the consumption of the large amount of wasabi (believed to have preservative properties) staved off the inevitable rot of their bodies. Because Shige and his men are already dead, it is apparently impossible to kill them – although Shige notes it was a 'close call' when Mugen nearly beheads him.
Shige, believing himself a descendant of the Heike, thought to eventually use the gold to defeat their ancient enemies the Genji clan, and claims that his biwa could summon the stars from heaven to strike his foes. When he encounters Mugen, Jin and Fuu, he offers them 10% of the treasure in exchange for their help at the quarry. Shige's quixotic quest came to an end, however, when Fuu discovered the nature of his men. During the ensuing confrontation, Jin announced his discovery that Shige was not a true descendant of the Heike, which he noticed upon examining the family tree Shige presented as evidence of his claim. This led to the zombie workers themselves turning on their would-be leader, serving him only out of the belief that he was heir to the Heike line. Seeing his plans come to nothing, Shige at last unveiled his ultimate weapon, and indeed summoned a meteor upon the entire area. Mugen, Jin and Fuu may have left by the time it arrived, since they survive for the next episode (though it's possible the mushrooms were psychedelic). The ultimate fate of Shige and his men is not known; presumably they were annihilated in the impact, though the ending credits to his episode are interrupted by a shot of him bursting from the grave—an indication that he 'lives' on.
Shige is inspired by Japanese video game designer, Shigesato Itoi (the creator of EarthBound), from his name, direct quotes, and his wasting much time and money searching for, in all likelihood, a nonexistent treasure. Shige's ability to summon a meteor may be referencing Dawn of the Dead, which unofficially speculates that meteors were involved in causing the zombies. His design is based on Brian Jones.[original research?]
The Brothers[edit]
Three brothers whose lives were ruined by Mukuro and Mugen during a pirate raid on a sugar shipment. The three brothers, who had been charged with security, were held responsible for the loss and forced to desert their positions in Satsuma. Mugen crippled the eldest brother during the raid, and they have been seeking his death ever since. As with Ryujiro, Mugen appears to have no recollection of the damage he caused. Predictably, he doesn't care once he is reminded, lambasting that 'once you point your sword at someone, it's either you kill them or they kill you; there ain't no in-betweens.'. Each of the three brothers' left eyes are red.
Denkibou[edit]
Voiced by: Keiichi Nanba (Japanese); Derek Stephen Prince (English)
The youngest and certainly the ugliest (hunchedposture, large fanatical eyes, crooked teeth) of the brothers; wears a steel claw on his left wrist. He is the least stable of the three and prone to violent fits of uncontrollable urges to kill. He carries a bisento short enough for him to wield and whines or shrieks wildly whenever he opens his mouth. He is given the task of bringing Mugen to his brothers, but loses control and attacks Mugen himself instead. He takes advantage of Mugen's inability to fight well in small spaces (they are on a boat), but Mugen overturns the boat. He is the first of the brothers to die, stabbed underwater by Mugen after Mugen grabs his clawed hand to keep him from attacking.
Umanosuke[edit]
Voiced by: Takehito Koyasu (Japanese); Doug Erholtz (English)
Umanosuke sports a hefty chonmage, is deformed in one eye (it is lidless; he wears an eye patch to compensate for this), and wields a spectacular weapon: a chain-sickle kusarigama with an incredibly long reach. He wears a daisho, indicating that he was once samurai, but relies principally on his kusarigama. It is a fearsome, highly destructive weapon. While a normal kusarigama makes use of the chain to ensnare the opponent so the wielder may attack at full advantage with the sickle, the chain of Umanosuke's kusarigama is located in the shaft and can be launched to at least forty feet and retracted, ostensibly by some sort of helix mechanism[original research?]. The sickle cuts effortlessly through solid objects like wood and rock; Umanosuke wields it with immense skill. Once retracted, it is effective as a scythe at close quarters.
When first seen, Umanosuke is cool and composed, and almost suave. He even has no problem with letting Fuu escape as long as he can kill Mugen. Upon his meeting Mugen, the composure crumbles, worse when the eye patch is cut away, and he spirals to Denkibou's level of madness. At this point, Umanosuke sports possibly the greatest destructive intent in the entire series, attacking in a berserk flurry of vicious attacks. Mugen gives up his sword in order to rescue Fuu from his clutches, but manages to reclaim it and, after a hard-fought battle, decapitates Umanosuke with his own weapon. The way he ends the battle is important; in the earlier battle against Kariya, Mugen is told that simply fighting on instinct shows everyone his limits and is soundly defeated. The manner in which Mugen works out Umanosuke's death shows Mugen overcoming his weakness.[original research?]
Toube[edit]
Toube is the eldest of the brothers and one whose lifestyle changed most after the attack: he now uses a wheelchair. Like his brothers, he lives for revenge; Mugen severed his leg in the raid on the ship he was protecting, and since then he has never uttered a word. He shoots Mugen in the back with a pistol concealed in the wheelchair's left armrest after watching Umanosuke die, then ignites a stash of dynamite concealed in the wheelchair's base, intending to take Mugen with him.
Kariya Kagetoki[edit]
Voiced by: Takayuki Sugou (Japanese); Steve Kramer (English)
An elite samurai working for the Shogunate known as the 'Hand of the Gods' because of his skill in combat. According to Goroujuu, a member of the Shogun's council, Kariya has not drawn his sword in quite some time since there hasn't been a worthy opponent in years. Upon learning of Sara's death, Kariya decides that Mugen and Jin are worthy adversaries, and brings himself out of retirement in order to face them.
His calm and collected demeanor hides a cold and manipulative personality. Kariya attempted to gain control of the Mujushin Dojo and is the one responsible for ordering Mariya Enshirou to kill Jin. He is ordered to seek out and kill Kasumi Seizou, the Sunflower Samurai, for his role in the Shimabara Rebellion as well as Kasumi's family — Fuu. Regarded amongst his peers as 'The Hand of the Gods' for his divine skills, being said that there is possibly no one in existence capable of defeating him, he is arguably the strongest fighter in the series. He fights Mugen and Jin simultaneously, easily handling Mugen's fighting style and defeating Jin in a standoff. Similar to Shōryū, he is a master of his ki and is able to use it with great force both offensively and defensively, and to an almost supernatural level. Jin defeats Kariya by sacrificing his own body to breach Kariya's defense, utilizing a strategy that his master, Mariya Enshirou, had described as suicidal.
